Alabama Scholarships

Alabama public high school math or science teachers with outstanding federal student loans who graduated from an approved secondary certification program may apply to the Alabama Commission on Higher Education for AMSTEP loan repayment. The base award is $7,500 per year ($3,750 per semester worked), renewable up to four consecutive years. Teachers in shortage districts may receive up to an additional $2,500 per year. The program encourages certification in math or science and placement in Alabama public schools where teacher shortages are most acute. The number of awards varies. AMSTEP is a state loan repayment program created by the Alabama Legislature to address math and science teacher shortages.

Need-based Alabama resident undergraduates attending eligible Alabama post-secondary institutions may receive grants through the Alabama Student Assistance Program (ASAP), administered by the Alabama Commission on Higher Education. One-time awards of up to $4,000 for four-year programs and $2,000 for two-year programs are granted on a semester basis during the first academic year. Alabama residents attending eligible independent, nonprofit Alabama colleges or universities may apply through their institution's financial aid office for the Alabama Student Grant Program, administered by ACHE. Awards vary yearly but cannot exceed $3,000 per academic year. This is a non-need-based state grant for undergraduate, non-sectarian study. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or in the process of becoming citizens and may not pursue a theology, divinity, or religious vocation degree. Deadlines vary by enrollment term. The program provides state financial assistance for residents attending independent postsecondary institutions in Alabama.

Full-time Alabama students enrolled in an agricultural major emphasizing turfgrass management with at least a 2.0 GPA may apply for the Alabama Golf Course Superintendents Association turfgrass scholarship. One recipient receives $2,000 annually, presented at the Donnie Arthur Golf Tournament. The check is payable to the recipient's college bursar. Applications are available through turf management advisors at universities or the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America. Submit your application during the open period. AGCSA awards this scholarship to support future golf course superintendents in their educational goals.

Alabama residents who are junior or senior undergraduates pursuing environmental health, a degree with at least 20 semester hours in biology, chemistry, environmental science, mathematics, or physical science, or any field with a parent who is a current AEHA member may apply. One recipient receives $1,000. Submit the AEHA scholarship application with proof of Alabama residency, a current unofficial transcript, and a 300-word essay on what environmental health means to you by September 1. The Alabama Environmental Health Association awards this scholarship annually to support students in environmental health and related sciences.

Alabama residents for at least five years from families where the head of household is blind and household income is at or below 1.3 times federal poverty guidelines may qualify. One competitive award per year provides a full-tuition waiver covering tuition and instructional fees at Alabama public colleges, universities, or trade schools, renewable for up to four years with annual reapplication.
