Weighted GPA versus unweighted GPA
Unweighted GPA measures grades on a 4.0 scale. Weighted GPA adds points for more demanding courses, so a strong schedule can produce a result above 4.0.
Because schools use different bonuses and credit systems, enter the weights printed in your handbook or transcript guide.
Honors, AP, and IB weighting
A common setup adds 0.5 points for Honors and 1.0 point for AP or IB courses, but no national weighting rule exists. The calculator keeps Honors, AP, IB, and dual-enrollment bonuses separate so they can match your school's policy.
The grade field is your transcript's course grade. An IB final subject result from 1 to 7 belongs in the IB calculators, not in this GPA calculation.
The result is credit-weighted, which means a two-credit course counts twice as much as a one-credit course.

Common questions
How do you calculate a weighted GPA?
Convert each high school course grade to grade points, add your school's bonus for Honors, AP, IB, or dual-enrollment courses, multiply by credits, and divide by total credits.
Is a weighted GPA on a 4.0 or 5.0 scale?
Both systems exist. Many schools use a 4.0 base and add 0.5 for Honors or 1.0 for AP and IB, which can produce GPAs above 4.0. Your transcript policy is the final authority.
Do colleges recalculate weighted GPA?
Many colleges recalculate GPA using their own course and grade rules. This calculator is most useful for checking your transcript and comparing weighted with unweighted results.
Does an A+ count as more than 4.0?
The default calculator caps an unweighted A+ at 4.0. You can still receive course-level bonus points from your school's weighting system.
