What is superscoring?
Colleges that superscore take your best section scores across all your test dates instead of your best single sitting. Best Reading & Writing plus best Math for the SAT; the average of your best four sections for the ACT.
How is an ACT superscore calculated?
Take your highest English, Math, Reading, and Science scores across sittings, average the four, and round to the nearest whole number (.5 rounds up). ACT reports this superscore officially alongside your composites.
Do all colleges superscore?
Most selective colleges superscore the SAT, and most also superscore the ACT, but not all. Harvard, for example, superscores the SAT but takes your highest single ACT composite, and UT Austin doesn't superscore at all. Check your school's policy.
Should I retake the test to improve my superscore?
If one section lags, often yes. You can focus prep on that section knowing your other scores are locked in. Two or three sittings is typical; colleges don't penalize multiple attempts at superscoring schools.
Does a higher superscore help with scholarships?
Yes. Many merit scholarships have SAT/ACT thresholds, and most use the same superscore your college application does. A 30-point section improvement can cross a scholarship cutoff even when your single-sitting composite doesn't.
