New York Scholarships

First-, second-, or third-year (night students only) law students from historically marginalized groups who are enrolled in a New York law school or are New York residents at a U.S. law school may apply. Applicants must be NYSBA and Environmental & Energy Law Section members (free for law students) and not graduate before December 2026. The fellowship provides a $10,000 summer stipend for at least eight weeks working on environmental or energy legal matters at a New York governmental agency or public interest organization. Applications are submitted via downloadable PDF form by February 20 annually. The program has awarded fellows since the 1990s to increase diversity in environmental and energy law. NYSBA's Environmental & Energy Law Section administers this fellowship to encourage underrepresented students to enter the field.

U.S. citizens pursuing campus-based study in the 2027-2028 academic year may apply to one or more stand-alone UNICO Foundation scholarships if they meet each fund's criteria. Most require Italian descent; several funds are open to all ethnicities. Award sizes vary by named fund, from about $1,000 to $10,000, covering high school seniors, undergraduates, graduate entrants, nursing, medical school, study abroad in Italy, and field-specific awards. Online applications are due March 15, 2027 for the 2027-2028 academic year. Applicants generally must reside in or hold chapter sponsorship from listed states (California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, or Wisconsin), with limited exceptions. UNICO National is an Italian-American service organization whose foundation promotes education, culture, and charitable projects nationwide.

Individual teaching artists may participate in SU-CASA, a city-funded residency placing artists at senior centers across New York City for approximately three months. Artists develop arts programming with participating seniors and deliver a public culminating event. Individual artists apply through their home borough arts council (Bronx Council on the Arts, Brooklyn Arts Council, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, or Staten Island Arts). Queens-based individual artists must partner with an organization for FY26. The FY26 DCLA deadline was October 23, 2025 at 5 PM ET. Stipends are typically $6,000 plus up to $2,000 for materials per published SU-CASA guidelines. SU-CASA is a collaboration of NYC Council, DCLA, DFTA, and borough arts councils.

New York residents enrolled full time in approved undergraduate or graduate teacher preparation programs leading to certification as a secondary (grades 7-12) math or science teacher may apply for the NYS Math and Science Teaching Incentive Program. Awards provide up to $7,000 per year for up to four years toward tuition, not to exceed the SUNY undergraduate rate. Recipients must teach math or science in a New York State secondary school for five years after graduation. Apply by March 15 through the NYS Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) website. Complete the FAFSA and TAP or NYS DREAM Act application annually.

Undergraduate students with at least one year of college completed, or graduate students, at accredited U.S. institutions whose daily lives are guided by spiritual values may apply. Preference goes to candidates residing in or attending schools in Connecticut, DC, Delaware, Maryland, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, and West Virginia. Grants typically range from $5,000 to $7,000 and may be renewed for subsequent years. Apply with three autobiographical essays, three letters of recommendation, an official transcript, and an in-person interview. Applicants must also demonstrate financial need. Albert and Toni Roothbert established the Fund to support students whose actions reflect strong moral and spiritual values.

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions awards this $7,000 merit scholarship to select incoming New York State first-year students who demonstrate outstanding academic excellence on a test-blind basis. No separate application is required; admitted students are reviewed automatically at acceptance. The award is renewable for up to three additional consecutive academic years, for a potential total of $28,000, if the recipient remains continuously enrolled full time at UAlbany with satisfactory academic progress and New York State tuition eligibility.

Undergraduate students of Armenian descent who are permanent residents of New York, New Jersey, or Connecticut and attend a U.S. college full time may apply. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and be in good academic standing. Awards range from $1,000 to $6,000 per academic year through the Hazaros Tabakoğlu, Hagop/Arousiag/Arpy Kashmanian, and Anni P. Nalbandian Memorial funds. Direct application through The New York Community Trust; the annual spring cycle recurs each year (2025 cycle closed). Contact the scholarships administrator for the next opening. The New York Community Trust has administered Armenian heritage scholarships since 1996.

Western New York residents apply once at cfgbscholarships.org to be considered for more than 200 scholarship funds administered by the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo. Eligible applicants must live in Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Niagara, Orleans, or Wyoming County, hold at least a 2.0 GPA, and plan full-time enrollment at an accredited nonprofit college beginning fall 2026 or a later term. Preference goes to Pell-eligible students attending school in Western New York. Typical awards range from $1,000 to $6,000.

First-generation graduate students who are permanent residents of California, Illinois, New York, or Texas and demonstrate financial need may apply for the David C. Lizárraga Fellowship from the TELACU Education Foundation, sponsored by Toyota. Priority goes to full-time Business or Engineering majors enrolled for the full academic year, though other graduate fields may be considered. Fellowships are $5,000. The number of recipients varies. Complete the online application with transcripts and financial documentation. Selected applicants participate in an interview evaluated on leadership, achievement, community commitment, and need. The fellowship supports students committed to economic empowerment in underserved communities.

Graduating high school seniors who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents of Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, New York, North Carolina, Utah, or select California counties may apply for the Greenhouse Scholars Whole Person College Program. Applicants need a 3.5+ unweighted GPA and household income at or below $80,000. Up to 37 scholars receive up to $5,000 per academic year in last-dollar tuition support over five undergraduate years, plus mentorship, professional networking, leadership training, internship support, flex funding grants, and community projects. Part 1 requires a short answer response; eligible applicants are invited to Part 2 with transcripts, test scores, two recommendations, four written responses, a five-minute video, and proof of income. Finalists attend in-person interviews. Semi-finalists and finalists complete a multi-stage application process.
