North Carolina Scholarships

Current and former North Carolina foster youth who were in U.S. foster care on or after their 17th birthday, were adopted from foster care after age 16, or entered kinship guardianship from foster care after age 16 may apply for Education and Training Vouchers. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or qualified non-citizens and at least 18 years old. Eligible students may receive up to $5,000 per year for up to five years or until age 26 toward accredited college or vocational training. Funding is limited and first-come, first-served. Complete the ETV application and submit semester enrollment documentation from your school confirming enrollment, cost of attendance, and unmet need. Reapply each year.

Graduating high school seniors who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents of Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, New York, North Carolina, Utah, or select California counties may apply for the Greenhouse Scholars Whole Person College Program. Applicants need a 3.5+ unweighted GPA and household income at or below $80,000. Up to 37 scholars receive up to $5,000 per academic year in last-dollar tuition support over five undergraduate years, plus mentorship, professional networking, leadership training, internship support, flex funding grants, and community projects. Part 1 requires a short answer response; eligible applicants are invited to Part 2 with transcripts, test scores, two recommendations, four written responses, a five-minute video, and proof of income. Finalists attend in-person interviews. Semi-finalists and finalists complete a multi-stage application process.

Students who reside in one of sixteen Triangle-area North Carolina counties and have been accepted to a four-year college or community college as a first-year student may apply for the Couch Oil Cares Scholarship. Six one-time awards of $2,000 each are presented annually at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Applicants must be no more than 25 years old at the time of the scholarship presentation. North Carolina residents with Type 1 diabetes who are enrolled in an accredited college or university in North Carolina may apply for the Justin Troy Page Memorial Scholarship. Multiple $1,500 awards are given annually. Selection is based on Type 1 diabetes status and a short essay. The Justin Troy Page Memorial Foundation honors a young man who pursued biopharmaceuticals despite living with Type 1 diabetes.

North Carolina residents enrolled in or accepted to an accredited LPN, ADN, or BSN nursing program in North Carolina with at least a 2.5 GPA may apply for the Barbara J. Brown Memorial Nursing Scholarship from the Annie Catherine Pridgen Community Development Foundation. One $1,000 award is given annually. Submit three brief essay responses, proof of enrollment, a transcript dated within the last 90 days, and the scholarship agreement. The award honors Barbara J. Brown, who served her community as a nurse for nearly sixty years.

North or South Carolina residents admitted to Duke University as first-year students are considered for the B.N. Duke Scholarship, established in 1986. Up to 12 scholars receive eight semesters of full tuition, room, board, and mandatory fees, plus funding for summer experiences. Rising sophomores complete the Carolina Summer of Service project. Selection weighs academic achievement and civic engagement. No separate application is required beyond the Duke admissions application. The scholarship is named for Benjamin N. Duke, who funded scholarships for Carolina students.

DACA, TPS, undocumented, and other high-need students who are graduating high school seniors or recent graduates residing in Georgia, North Carolina, or South Carolina may apply for the Golden Door Scholarship. Applicants need a minimum 3.2 GPA, demonstrated financial need, and a plan to major in a career-ready field. Awards cover full tuition and room and board for up to four years at a participating partner college, along with career coaching and mentorship. Exact amounts may vary by college match. Complete the full application, including required essay and video, plus academic transcripts and other requested materials. Recipients accept their college match and major in a preferred field.

U.S. citizens or permanent residents who are high school seniors or college freshmen or sophomores under age 20 and residing in eligible states or the District of Columbia may apply. Applicants need a minimum 3.0 GPA (high school seniors) or 2.75 GPA (college students), plus demonstrated academic achievement, leadership, community involvement, and financial need. Award amounts vary based on need and may renew for up to four academic years. Complete the application with details on honors, leadership, community service, financial need, and future goals. Funds must be used at an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Student-athletes in intercollegiate sports and exclusively online students are ineligible. The Jimmy Rane Foundation has awarded hundreds of scholarships to help deserving students pursue college educations.
