About this scholarship

New York residents enrolled full time in approved undergraduate or graduate teacher preparation programs leading to certification as a secondary (grades 7-12) math or science teacher may apply for the NYS Math and Science Teaching Incentive Program.

Awards provide up to $7,000 per year for up to four years toward tuition, not to exceed the SUNY undergraduate rate. Recipients must teach math or science in a New York State secondary school for five years after graduation.

Apply by March 15 through the NYS Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) website. Complete the FAFSA and TAP or NYS DREAM Act application annually.

  • Be a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen and a legal NYS resident (12 continuous months), or qualify under the NYS DREAM Act
  • Be enrolled full-time (at least 12 credits) in an approved math or science teacher education program at a NYS college/university
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5
  • Complete the FAFSA and TAP application (or DREAM Act application) annually for payment
  • Sign a Service Contract agreeing to live and teach full-time in NYS in math or science at a secondary school (grades 7-12) for 5 years
  • Submit the HESC web application by the deadline (May 13 for the most recent cycle)
