Community Service Scholarships

High-achieving undergraduate students at UW-Madison, including those in the College of Letters and Science and Wisconsin School of Business, may be considered for the Rath Foundation Academic Scholarship based on academic excellence, leadership, and community service. This renewable merit award provides up to $30,000 over four years. Apply through the Wisconsin Scholarship Hub (WiSH) general and college-specific scholarship applications.

Students with strong academics, meaningful community service, and financial need who plan to attend an accredited college, university, or vocational/technical school may apply for the Chick-fil-A Community Scholars program. At least thirteen recipients receive $25,000 scholarships annually for tuition, fees, books, and other education-related expenses. Recipients also participate in a one-year leadership and mentoring program. Submit a completed application with transcript, detailed answers about your achievements and service, and a recommender's recommendation before the deadline.

Incoming first-year students applying to Virginia Commonwealth University for fall admission are automatically considered for the Provost Scholarship when Common Application materials and an official high school transcript arrive by November 1. The award covers in-state tuition and fees up to $16,000 per year and renews for up to three additional years with a 3.3 cumulative GPA and at least 28 credit hours per academic year. FAFSA submission is encouraged but not required for non-U.S. citizens.

Incoming first-year Virginia Commonwealth University students who submit the Common Application and an official high school transcript by November 1 are automatically considered for the VCU Presidential Scholarship. Recipients are selected on academic merit; leadership, community service, and artistic talent may also be considered. The four-year award covers tuition and fees as well as room and board (room allowance equal to an Honors College residence hall room; board equivalent to the 250 Block plus $225 Dining Dollars meal plan). Merit awards cover in-state costs. Renewable for up to three consecutive years with a 3.3 cumulative GPA and at least 28 credit hours on a full-time basis over fall and spring.

Black or African American U.S. citizens or permanent residents who are current high school seniors with academic excellence, leadership, community service, and financial need may apply for the Ron Brown Scholar Program. Up to 25 scholars receive $10,000 awards. Funds may be applied at any four-year U.S. college in any discipline. Submit two essays of approximately 500 words each, letters of recommendation, academic transcripts, and family tax information. Finalists participate in a weekend selection process in Washington, D.C.

High school graduates in Texas Education Agency Region XIII counties with a minimum 3.0 GPA, community service, leadership, and financial need may apply for Roy F. and Joann Cole Mitte Foundation scholarships. Awards are up to $10,000 per year at a four-year Texas college or up to $5,000 per year at a two-year Texas college, with renewal each year. ACT/SAT minimums and essays are required. The program is administered by Scholarship America. Monitor the foundation scholarship page for the next application cycle.

Registered nursing program candidates with demonstrated community service and a connection to the Grossmont Healthcare District may apply for the Richard J. Bea Community Service Scholarship. Eligible connections include district residency for at least one year, district employment for at least two years, or graduation from a district high school. Two scholarships are awarded annually to RN students who have completed one successful year in a registered nursing program. Submit nursing program transcripts, faculty advisor contact information, volunteer evidence, and a 500-word essay on community service and nursing aspirations. Applicants may apply to only one Grossmont Healthcare District program per year.

South Carolina resident freshmen with exceptional academics, leadership, talent, and service may be considered for the University of South Carolina Alumni Scholars Award, sponsored by the Alumni Association. Recipients receive $8,000 per year. Submit the general admissions application and a separate Honors College application by November 15. Maintain a 3.0 USC GPA to renew.

Nonresident incoming freshmen with outstanding academics, leadership, talent, and service may qualify for the University of South Carolina Alumni Scholars Award, sponsored by the Alumni Association. The annual cash award is $8,000 per year plus a tuition reduction to the in-state rate. Submit the general admissions application and a separate Honors College application by November 15. Nonresidents may hold only one general university merit scholarship, though the Provost Scholars Award may stack.

Outstanding first-year applicants to Virginia Commonwealth University who apply for fall admission with the Common Application and an official transcript by November 1 are automatically considered for university-level scholarships. The number of recipients varies. The Deans' Scholarship covers tuition and fees up to $8,000 per year ($4,000 per semester). It is a four-year award with an estimated total value of about $32,000. Renewal for up to three additional years requires at least 28 credit hours over fall and spring on a full-time basis and a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or better.
