APA References page format

APA uses the heading References for the complete source list at the end of a paper. Entries are alphabetized by author, double-spaced, and formatted with a hanging indent. Every source cited in the text should have a matching reference entry, with limited exceptions such as personal communications.

APA 7 references commonly include the author, publication date, title, and source. Journal references may also need a volume, issue, page range, and DOI. Book references need the publisher and edition when applicable.

Reference list versus bibliography

An APA References page contains the retrievable sources cited in the paper. The word bibliography is broader and may include material consulted but not cited. Use References for a standard APA 7 assignment unless your instructor asks for a different list.

Harvard, IEEE, Vancouver, AMA, and several scientific systems also use a reference list, although their ordering and in-text citation rules differ. Open the general Citation Generator when your course requires one of those formats.

Common questions

How do I create an APA reference list?

Add every retrievable source cited in the paper, verify its metadata, and copy the automatically alphabetized APA 7 list onto a page titled References.

Is an APA source list called References or Works Cited?

APA calls the list References. Works Cited is the standard MLA term.

How are APA references ordered?

APA references are normally alphabetized by the surname of the first author. The citation engine applies the selected style's sorting rules automatically.

Do APA references use a hanging indent?

Yes. The first line begins at the left margin and later lines are indented. Preserve the hanging indent after copying the list into your document.

Can I generate Harvard or IEEE references too?

Yes. Open the general Citation Generator for Harvard, IEEE, Vancouver, AMA, ACS, ASA, CSE, and other supported styles.

What information belongs in an APA reference?

Most references need an author, date, title, and source. The exact fields vary by source type, so include identifiers such as a DOI or ISBN when available.
