Canadian citizens or permanent residents enrolled in, applying to, or planning full-time admission to an eligible thesis-based master's program may apply for the Tri-Agency Canada Graduate Research Scholarship - Master's (CGRS-M). As of December 31 of the competition year, applicants must have completed between 0 and 12 months of full-time study in the graduate program. Indigenous and Black student researchers may be considered for supplemental awards. The award is $27,000 for one year and is not renewable. Registered Dalhousie graduate students in the second year or later of a full-time master's or doctoral program who face a temporary financial emergency, such as unforeseen medical costs, may apply for an FGS Emergency Bursary of up to $1,000. You must show financial need and have applied for government student loans (or explain why not). A maximum of one award is granted per 12-month period. Complete the online application with supporting documentation; the committee reviews applications monthly. Social Work, Medicine, and Dentistry students should use their own faculty bursary routes.

Four $1,000 in-program bursaries are awarded annually. Apply through the Faculty of Graduate Studies during the October competition window. Recipients also receive a copy of The Life & Thoughts of Tony Johnstone. The fund honours Dr. P. Anthony Johnstone, former Executive Director of the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission.

Full-time Dalhousie thesis-based master's or doctoral students presenting a poster or paper based on thesis research at a national or international scholarly conference may apply for an FGS conference travel grant. Canadian and international students are eligible. You may receive one grant per degree and must be registered in both the term of application and the term of the conference. Supervisor approval is required on the application. The maximum award is $500 for travel from Halifax at the lowest available fares. Abstract, poster, banquet, and visa costs are not eligible. For conferences within 100 km of Halifax, only registration costs can be claimed. Submit the PDF application and supporting materials by email to financial.coordinator@dal.ca at least one month before the conference. Decisions are not subject to appeal.
