About this scholarship

The Iowa Newspaper Foundation awards roughly seven to eight college scholarships each year, typically $500 to $1,000 each, to students preparing for careers in journalism and the newspaper industry. Named awards include the Carter Pitts, Iowa Journalism Institute, David W. Belin, Fred W. Woodward, Morlan and Jack Hovelson scholarships.

The program is open to Iowa high school seniors and current college students planning journalism or communications careers; most awards go to students from Iowa or attending Iowa colleges and universities, while the Woodward scholarship covers study in Iowa, Illinois or Wisconsin and the Shaw award is for dependents of Iowa newspaper employees.

The online application is distributed through Iowa high schools and college journalism departments each fall. The 2026 deadline was February 13, with information for the next cycle posted in September.
