About this scholarship
U.S. undergraduate students receiving a Federal Pell Grant who are applying to or accepted into a credit-bearing study abroad or international internship program may apply for the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship from the U.S. Department of State.
Awards are up to $5,000 for eligible program expenses, including tuition, room and board, books, transportation, and passport or visa fees. Gilman scholars also receive 12 months of federal noncompetitive eligibility hiring status.
Apply through the Gilman Program online portal with required essays addressing your goals, financial need, and program fit. Applications are offered twice annually with deadlines tied to your program term.

- Four required short essays
- 4 required short essays, each with a 500-word maximum
- Two optional supplemental essays (CNLA and STEM), each with a 300-word maximum, only required if applying for those specific supplemental awards
- Essays should be no more than one page single-spaced, 1-inch margins, Times New Roman 12-point font, composed in paragraph format (not numbered responses)
- Exceeding the stated word limit may render the application ineligible
- Optional Critical Need Language Award and STEM Supplemental Award essays apply only to applicants seeking those supplements.
- Applications are submitted through the Gilman Program online portal.
