How your average is calculated

In percentage mode, each course's grade is weighted by its credits: multiply grade by credits, add them up, then divide by total credits. In 4.0 mode, letter grades convert to grade points first (an A is 4.0, a B is 3.0) and the same weighting applies.

A+ / A 4.0A- 3.7B+ 3.3B 3.0B- 2.7C+ 2.3C 2.0C- 1.7D+ 1.3D 1.0D- 0.7F 0.0

Percentage-to-GPA conversions vary by university, so enter whichever format your transcript uses.

Common questions

How do I calculate my average in Canada?

Multiply each course's percentage grade by its credit weight, add them up, then divide by your total credits. That credit-weighted average is what most Canadian schools and scholarships look at.

How do I convert my percentage to a 4.0 GPA?

There's no single national conversion. Each university publishes its own scale (OMSAS, for example, maps 85%+ to 3.9-4.0). If your transcript shows letter grades, switch this calculator to the 4.0 scale and enter those directly.

Do Canadian universities use GPA or percentages?

Most grade in percentages, but many (like UBC, Waterloo, and McGill) also report a GPA on a 4.0, 4.33, or 9-point scale. Check your transcript; this calculator handles both percentage and 4.0 entries.

What average do I need for scholarships in Canada?

Entrance awards often start around 80%, but plenty of Canadian scholarships never look at grades. Award Scholar matches you with awards you actually qualify for, whatever your average.
