Does UVA Require the CSS Profile?

UVA requires the CSS Profile for first-year institutional need-based aid and uses CSS code 5820. Its current 2027–28 guide has one March 1 deadline across admission plans, separates federal-only filing, and points eligible Virginia non-FAFSA filers to VASA.

CSS Profile

Required

First-year U.S. citizens and eligible noncitizens seeking all forms of UVA need-based aid submit the CSS Profile and FAFSA. Virginia students who cannot file the FAFSA may use the VASA application, while federal-only applicants submit only the FAFSA.

Which parent files?

When biological or adoptive parents are divorced, separated, never married, and living apart, UVA requires a CSS Profile from both living parents. A parent unable to participate may be considered through UVA's noncustodial-parent waiver process, which takes approximately two weeks to review.

Documents and next steps

Use UVA CSS code 5820 and FAFSA code 003745. After both applications arrive, check the SIS To Do List for requested parent or student tax documents. UVA may also send an IDOC request by email, so applicants should submit supporting records only through the route UVA identifies.
