Scholarships at Yale University

The Alan S. Tetelman 1958 Fellowships support original undergraduate STEM research conducted outside the United States by enrolled Yale College sophomores and juniors. Awards fund roughly ten weeks of summer research with a foreign principal investigator; prior research experience at Yale or elsewhere is expected. Structured internship or coursework programs are ineligible. Applications require a research proposal, transcript, CV, a letter from the foreign mentor, and a Yale faculty reference, submitted through the Student Grants Database by February 12 annually. Funding supports travel and living costs for independent laboratory or field projects abroad.

The Yale College Dean's Research Fellowship funds sophomores and juniors with little or no prior research experience to conduct at least ten weeks of consecutive, full-time STEM research at Yale under a faculty mentor during the summer. Applicants in any Yale College major may apply if proposing research in natural sciences, engineering, mathematics, or computer science; clinical research is ineligible. The stipend is five thousand dollars. Students must remain enrolled at Yale when applying and when receiving the award. Submit a proposal, transcript, CV, mentor recommendation, and second reference through the Student Grants Database by February 19 annually.

The Summer Experience Award is a one-time, non-competitive four-thousand-dollar stipend for Yale College first-years, sophomores, and juniors who receive Yale financial aid and have secured an eligible unpaid or underfunded professional development experience. Qualifying experiences must last at least eight weeks at thirty hours per week with a nonprofit, government, arts, or research host; for-profit domestic employers and fully remote roles are ineligible. Apply through the Student Grants Database after securing a supervisor who completes host verification. Priority deadline is April 1; final deadline is May 1 at 5 p.m. Eastern. Funds disburse via Zelle.

Children of active Allegheny County Bar Association members who practice principally in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and who plan to attend Yale University or the successor schools of the University of Paris may apply for undergraduate or graduate study support. Award amounts vary. Submit the scholarship application at the same time as the admission application to Yale or the University of Paris schools. Contact the institutional trust officer listed by the Allegheny County Bar Foundation for details. The fund was established by the will of Kennedy T. Friend, a member of the Allegheny County Bar.

The Richard U. Light Fellowship provides full funding for Yale undergraduate, graduate, and professional students to pursue intensive Chinese, Japanese, or Korean language study at approved programs in East Asia for a summer, semester, academic year, or combination. Awards cover tuition, room and board, transportation, and incidentals at partner institutions in China, Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea. Applicants must be enrolled Yale students with at least one year of target-language study at Yale or equivalent proficiency but not so advanced that significant gains are unlikely. Apply separately to the Light Fellowship and to an approved program; competitions occur twice annually. Citizenship is not a selection factor.

The Henry Fellowship supports one year of postgraduate study at the University of Oxford or the University of Cambridge for one graduating Yale College senior selected annually. The award covers university and college tuition, a maintenance stipend, and transatlantic travel; candidates of any nationality may apply through Yale's campus process coordinated by Fellowship Programs. Applicants must apply independently to their chosen Oxford or Cambridge degree program before submitting the Yale campus application, typically due in early February. Selection considers academic distinction and a definite plan of study or research feasible at the chosen British university.

Established in 1872, the John Addison Porter Prize recognizes a work of original scholarship in any field presented in literary form of general human interest. The competition is open to all Yale degree candidates, including Yale College undergraduates and graduate students; judges may also consider the same submission for the related Theron Rockwell Field Prize. Entries must be bound hard copies plus an electronic copy submitted through the Yale Student Grants and Fellowships platform, with a one-page non-technical summary for works over fifty pages. Winners are announced at Commencement. Non-English submissions require an English translation.
