About this scholarship

Legal U.S. residents age 16 or older in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, or Texas who have at least one year of undergraduate study remaining may enter. A minimum 2.0 GPA and good academic standing are required. Previous winners are ineligible.

Sixteen awards of $8,000 each are granted per year across four quarterly contests, with two written-essay and two video-essay winners per quarter. Awards may not be applied to graduate school expenses.

Submit a written essay up to 500 words or a video up to 3 minutes about a community member who personally inspired you and helped you build confidence to achieve your goals. AI use is prohibited. Quarterly deadlines are March 31, June 30, September 30, and December 31.

  • Essay may be submitted as a Written Essay OR a Video Essay (one essay per entry).
  • Written Essay Word Limit: 500 words or less (including 'I,' 'a,' 'and,' etc.).
  • Video Essay alternative: no more than 3 minutes in length; .mp4/.mpg/.mov/.avi/.wmv; max file size 1 GB; no music; no other people shown; no password/login.
  • Essay must be in English and must be your own original work (no AI-generated text or AI essay writers allowed).
  • Judging: 0-50 pts for showing how the individual inspired you, 0-25 pts creativity/originality, 0-25 pts quality.
  • Eligibility: legal U.S. resident of an eligible state, age 16+ (or under 21 if MS resident), at least 1 year (18 semester hours) remaining before undergrad graduation, min 2.0 GPA / good standing.
  • Run as a quarterly contest; one entry per person per quarterly contest period.
  • Essay must be in English and original; AI-generated text is prohibited.
  • One entry per person per quarterly contest period.
  • Mississippi residents must be under age 21.
