Nuclear Engineering Scholarships

Through the Pulp and Paper Advisory Board, NC State awards merit scholarships to students enrolled in the paper science and engineering program or intended paper science track. Incoming first-year awards are currently valued at $3,000 per year and continue for up to four years across eight semesters if recipients maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA and follow the program curriculum. Admitted students complete the Pack ASSIST application and paper science supplemental questions by the February 15 priority deadline. Co-op semesters temporarily suspend but restore the award upon return.

The Computer Science and Software Engineering (CSSE) Scholarship fund at UW-Platteville supports students in computer science, software engineering, and cybersecurity programs. Dr. Ronald Meissen and Eileen Meissen established the endowed fund with a matching gift from the CSSE advisory board to recruit and retain students in these high-demand fields. Scholarships target freshman entrants to the CSSE department and are awarded through the UW-Platteville general scholarship application. The fund doubled scholarship capacity for one of the university's growing centers of engineering excellence.

World's largest pre-college science and engineering competition for high school students in grades 9–12. Finalists qualify by winning a top prize at a Society-affiliated local, regional, or state science fair, then compete at the annual ISEF finals. More than $7 million in grand and special awards is distributed annually, including a $100,000 top prize and category awards from $600 to $6,000 plus dozens of sponsor special awards.

Predoctoral, postdoctoral, and junior faculty researchers working on nuclear security policy, nuclear terrorism or nonproliferation, or nuclear energy may apply. This is an in-residence fellowship at Stanford's Center for International Security and Cooperation for one academic year of research and writing. Award amounts vary. Applicants are considered for all eligible CISAC fellowships, including the Nuclear Security Fellowship.

U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, and U.S. dual citizens who intend to pursue a doctoral degree in a DoD-relevant science or engineering discipline at a U.S. institution may apply for the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship. Baccalaureate, master's, and early-stage PhD candidates are eligible. The three-year fellowship covers full tuition and required fees (excluding room and board), a $3,600 monthly stipend ($43,200 annually), and health insurance support up to $1,600. The program typically awards between 150 and 350 fellowships each year. Apply through the NDSEG program portal during the annual cycle. Research areas must align with DoD service Broad Agency Announcements and related strategy documents.

Graduate science or engineering students in the Intermountain Section of the American Water Works Association whose research involves water quality, supply, or treatment may apply. Students who have been accepted but are not yet enrolled are also eligible. The award is $2,500. Recipients also receive a one-year AWWA student membership. Submit an online application, resume, career-goals essay, and two letters of recommendation.

High school seniors who are residents of Mercer, Rock Island, Henry, Whiteside, Carroll, Knox, Lee, Clinton, Scott, Muscatine, or Louisa County and plan to pursue a STEM-related degree, associate degree, or skilled trades certification may apply for Quad City Engineering and Science Council (QCESC) scholarships. One-time awards range from $1,000 to $3,000 and must be applied to tuition or fees for STEM study. Selection considers academics, civic/community service, extracurricular involvement, career goals, and an essay. Complete the application with academic records, essay, and references. Winners may be asked for a photo for local announcement and may have contact information shared with QCESC member organizations for additional scholarship opportunities. QCESC has awarded these scholarships annually since 1994 in collaboration with member societies, local businesses, and regional universities.

Department of War-sponsored research symposium for U.S. high school students in grades 9–12. Students submit original STEM research papers to a regional symposium; top regional finalists advance to the national competition in Washington, D.C. with expenses paid. National oral finalists earn undergraduate tuition scholarships up to $12,000; regional finalists earn up to $2,000. Scholarships are paid directly to the student's college upon matriculation in a STEM major.
