Nova Scotia Scholarships

Current residents of one of the four Atlantic provinces entering first year of any Queen's University undergraduate degree. Selection considers academic excellence, leadership, school or community involvement, and demonstrated financial need. Up to 10 renewable awards of $20,000 to $30,000 per year for up to four years of study. Submit a Financial Aid and Awards Profile and the Major Admission Awards application.

Open to students entering Saint Mary's University in a three-year Bachelor of Arts program who intend to enroll in the Bachelor of Education (Elementary) program to become a teacher in a Catholic school, with a five-year full-time commitment. One scholarship of $8,000 is available. First preference goes to graduates of Athol Murray College of Notre Dame in Saskatchewan who meet academic entrance requirements and have shown volunteer and extracurricular involvement there. If none apply, the award opens to students from Catholic high schools in Saskatchewan, then to Catholic high schools in Alberta or other jurisdictions. After the first year, holders must register in 30 or more credit hours in the award year, volunteer with children or youth, and maintain a superior grade average. Candidates must submit an essay explaining why they wish to become a teacher in a Catholic school.

Master's or doctoral students in any discipline at Dalhousie with first-class standing (GPA 3.7/4.3) in the two years before application may compete for the Glendon Chase McCormick Scholarship. Canadian and international students are eligible. A minimum of two $4,000 one-time in-program scholarships are awarded annually. Apply through the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The scholarship honours Dr. Glendon Chase McCormick, a Dalhousie science graduate and McGill physics PhD who pioneered weather detection using radar at Canada's National Research Council.

Master's or doctoral students enrolled in Dalhousie's Faculty of Graduate Studies who demonstrate financial need may apply. Preference goes to single mothers in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences whose research incorporates a social justice analysis or focuses on women's studies. Second preference goes to single mothers in any Dalhousie graduate program. Canadian and international students are eligible. One bursary of at least $3,000 is awarded annually. Apply through the Faculty of Graduate Studies scholarship platform by the October deadline. The bursary honours Linda Marie Gillingwater Rainsberry, a writer, educator, and television producer who knew firsthand the financial hardship of raising children as a single mother.

Canadian or international master's or doctoral students at Dalhousie University researching Parkinson's disease genetics, disease mechanisms, or treatments that reverse or counteract the biological processes that cause the disease may apply. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and be enrolled in a graduate program. The in-program bursary is $2,000 per year. Apply by October 31 at 4 p.m. ADT. The Parkinson Society of Nova Scotia established the fund.

Indigenous women from Mi'kma'ki, Nunatsiavut, or Atlantic Canada who attend a Canadian post-secondary institution may apply. Applicants must have completed the equivalent of one year of post-secondary study within the previous two years. Awards of $500 to $2,000 are based on scholastic achievement, service to Indigenous communities, and financial need. Apply through CFNS's Cognito Forms portal by July 30 each year. The fund honors Inuk scholar and MMIWG advocate Loretta Saunders, established in 2014.

Full-time first-year students entering the University of Prince Edward Island from the Halifax region may apply for the Halifax Friends of UPEI Entrance Scholarship. Candidates need a minimum 85% average, community service experience during high school, and must not hold another scholarship worth more than $2,500. One award of $1,500 is available.

Master's or doctoral students in any discipline at Dalhousie University may apply. Candidates need first-class standing (GPA 3.7/4.3 or higher) in the last two years of previous study and significant community and university involvement. Canadian and international students are eligible. Two $750 bursaries are awarded annually. Apply by October 31 at 4 p.m. ADT. The award memorializes Joe Ghiz, a Dalhousie Commerce and Law graduate who served as Premier of Prince Edward Island and later as Dean of Law at Dalhousie.

Full-time Dalhousie thesis-based master's or doctoral students presenting a poster or paper based on thesis research at a national or international scholarly conference may apply for an FGS conference travel grant. Canadian and international students are eligible. You may receive one grant per degree and must be registered in both the term of application and the term of the conference. Supervisor approval is required on the application. The maximum award is $500 for travel from Halifax at the lowest available fares. Abstract, poster, banquet, and visa costs are not eligible. For conferences within 100 km of Halifax, only registration costs can be claimed. Submit the PDF application and supporting materials by email to financial.coordinator@dal.ca at least one month before the conference. Decisions are not subject to appeal.

Students enrolled in the Faculty of Arts and Science, Dentistry, or Law who are bona fide residents of and domiciled in the County of Victoria, Nova Scotia (as defined by boundaries extant in AD 1900) may apply. Character and financial need are the main criteria. Bursary amounts vary. Apply through the general online bursary program.
