Mathematics Scholarships in Canada

Students entering any University of Waterloo Faculty of Mathematics program except Software Engineering or Computing and Financial Management may be considered for these entrance scholarships. Applicants may also be eligible for other Faculty of Mathematics and university-based scholarships. Up to 15 scholarships are available, paid equally over eight academic terms. Recipients must maintain a minimum 80% average and take five courses each academic term after first year to continue receiving payments. International students on a study permit entering any Faculty of Mathematics program at the University of Waterloo except Software Engineering or Computing and Financial Management may be considered. Up to 10 scholarships totaling $12,000 to $40,000 are paid equally over eight academic terms (about $3,000 to $10,000 per year). After first year, recipients must maintain a minimum 80% average and take five courses each academic term to continue receiving payments.

Open to a full-time student currently enrolled in the fourth year of study in Toronto Metropolitan University's Department of Mathematics who achieved the highest CGPA at the end of third year, maintained a clear academic record, and has taken all Mathematics courses up to third year as outlined in the undergraduate calendar. The award is $1,000.

Students with superior academic achievement entering the fourth year of a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Mathematics may receive the Yahya Scholarship in Mathematics. One scholarship of $250 is awarded. Selection is based on academic standing.

Graduating Primary/Junior Schulich School of Education students at Nipissing University who excelled in Mathematics Education and were highly successful in practice teaching may receive the Stan Pasko Mathematics Award. The award is $2,375. Recipients must demonstrate financial need and be Ontario residents as defined by OSAP. Students are nominated by the Faculty.

Open to academically outstanding University of Victoria undergraduate students in the Honours or combined Honours program in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. One or more scholarships are awarded; the amount varies. No application is required. Recipients are recommended by the department.

University of Winnipeg students of outstanding academic promise who are entering or continuing major work in Pattern A or B of the mathematics major may receive this scholarship. One scholarship of $262 is awarded.

University of Toronto University College students enrolled in the Mathematics Specialist Program may receive the Galois Awards in Mathematics, which recognize the best students in the program. The primary selection criterion is financial need. Number and value of awards vary. Apply using the online grant application on ACORN.

Full-time Toronto Metropolitan University undergraduates in their third or fourth year with a declared major in a Department of Mathematics program who are in good academic standing and show strong enthusiasm for mathematics may apply. One or more awards of $2,000 or more are granted annually. Enthusiasm may be shown through attendance at seminars and colloquia, participation in the Math Student Union, outreach volunteering, or pursuit of an honours degree. Applications must include a recent transcript, a statement of interest in mathematics, and a letter of reference from a faculty member or other individual who can verify commitment to the subject.

For the UBC Vancouver student with the highest standing in third-year Honours Mathematics who proceeds to the final year of that course. One scholarship of $750 is offered on the recommendation of the Department of Mathematics. No separate application is required. The award memorializes Daniel Buchanan, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science (1928-1948) and Head of the Department of Mathematics (1920-1948).
