French Scholarships in Canada

U.S. or Canadian citizens or permanent residents with at least junior standing in a German Studies track or minor, or graduate students in humanities and social sciences working on German Studies, may be nominated by a department or program chair for DAAD German Studies Research Grants. PhD students preparing dissertation proposals on modern German topics may also be nominated; students whose proposals were formally accepted more than one year before the deadline are not eligible. Grants of up to $3,000 support one to two months of short-term research in Germany. The number of recipients varies. Nomination by a supervising professor or principal advisor is required. Applications are accepted in spring and fall each year through the DAAD application process.

University of Regina students entering directly from a Canadian high school to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in the Faculty of Arts may receive this $3,000 entrance scholarship. Candidates need a minimum 85% early conditional admission average and must remain registered in at least 9 credit hours when the award is presented. A letter of recommendation from your high school principal or guidance counselor must be sent to Student Awards and Financial Aid. Apply by March 15.

Full-time undergraduate translation or linguistics students at the University of Ottawa School of Translation and Interpretation or Department of Linguistics who take at least three French-taught courses (nine units), demonstrate financial need, and have excellent academic standing. Applicants may be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, protected/refugee status holders, or international students. Minimum $1,500. Apply via uoZone with the Financial Questionnaire and transcript by November 3.

York University French Studies students entering Year 3 or 4 with demonstrated financial need, Ontario residency, Canadian citizenship or permanent-resident/protected-person status, minimum 8.00 cumulative GPA, and outstanding achievement in required French communication courses (Keele FR 2081/2082 or Glendon GL/FRAN 2810). $1,400 prize. Complete FAAS profile with attention to the financial section. Made possible by the Ontario Modern Language Teachers' Association Toronto French Contest.

Undergraduate students enrolled in the French Studies program at Glendon with a minimum grade point average of 7.5 may apply. Recipients must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or protected persons, be residents of Ontario, and demonstrate financial need. One award of $1,250 is granted annually.

Open to a full-time undergraduate or graduate student of Black African descent in any year of study in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Windsor. Selection is based on academic merit (minimum entering average of 75%, or in-course minimum cumulative average of 73%). One award of $1,000. Apply online.

Second-, third-, or fourth-year specialization students in the Département de français at the University of Ottawa who intend to continue in the specialization or Master's program the following year, are Ontario residents under OSAP rules, demonstrate financial need, and are involved in student associations or social movements are eligible. The award is at least $1,000. Apply through Online Scholarships and Bursaries in uOZone by November 3 with the Financial Questionnaire, a letter of intent, and a CV. The Bruno-Kaye Scholarship (OSOTF) supports academic excellence in the French specialization.

Full-time third-year Common Law JD students at the University of Ottawa who are Ontario residents with financial need, high academic achievement, and exceptional contribution to the Common Law Section. County of Carleton Law Association membership or involvement is preferred. Two OTSS awards of minimum $1,000 (one English-program and one French-program recipient). University of Alberta Faculty of Native Studies students with superior academic achievement in Advanced Cree courses may receive the Adrian Hope Prize in Cree Language. The prize is $875 (one award). The recipient is chosen on academic standing in Advanced Cree. Apply through the University of Alberta Awards Hub.

Full-time University of Ottawa undergraduates who have completed at least two Portuguese courses in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures may apply. The award is valued at $500. Apply via the Online Scholarships and Bursaries portal in uoZone with an unofficial transcript by November 3. The Portugal - Gaspar Côrte Real Scholarship Portuguese Language and Culture Fund recognizes excellence in Portuguese language and culture studies.
