French Scholarships in Canada

Awarded to the student who has achieved the highest A grade in any undergraduate course in Ukrainian language or literature. The scholarship is valued at $400. A student is not eligible to receive the award more than once.

University of Waterloo on-campus students in first- or second-year French courses who intend to specialize in French are eligible for this scholarship. One award of $1,500 goes annually to the most promising student meeting those criteria. It was established in honour of Jacqueline Forster, a French language instructor at Waterloo from 1976 to 1989 and a Distinguished Teacher Award recipient.

Open to a third- or fourth-year student at Université Sainte-Anne, recommended by the Department of French, to attend a French-language institution in Quebec or France for a French immersion program of at least six weeks. One bursary of $1,270 is awarded annually. The bursary may support summer or regular academic year study abroad.

For students in the UBC Faculty of Education on the Vancouver and Okanagan campuses who have successfully completed a French course or workshop offered by the Department of Language and Literacy Education. Awards are offered by the Department of Language and Literacy Education. Recipients are chosen on department recommendation. There is no separate application.

Open to a graduating UBC Vancouver student with outstanding work in French-Canadian literature. The $700 prize is awarded on the recommendation of the Department of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies. No separate application is required. Adelia Livesey endowed the prize as a tribute to her daughter, Joan Livesey.

Outstanding M.A. students at UBC Vancouver whose studies focus on European French literature are eligible. The award is a $3,050 memorial prize endowed by family and friends in memory of Benjamin Edinger (1969-1993). No separate student application is required. The Department of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies recommends recipients in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Canadian citizens or permanent residents registered in French-language Teacher Education (Formation à l'enseignement) or a French-language master's or doctoral education program related to special education at the University of Ottawa Faculty of Education may apply. Applicants should have completed high school in French in Ontario, demonstrate financial need, show commitment to French-language special education, and meet academic excellence standards including positive practicum evaluations. The award is $2,000. Apply via uoZone by November 3. The Denis Lévesque and Ronald Leduc Scholarship (OTSS) supports French-language special education studies at the Faculty of Education.

York University French Studies students entering Year 3 or 4 with demonstrated financial need, Ontario residency, Canadian citizenship or permanent-resident/protected-person status, minimum 8.00 cumulative GPA, and outstanding achievement in required French communication courses (Keele FR 2081/2082 or Glendon GL/FRAN 2810). $1,400 prize. Complete FAAS profile with attention to the financial section. Made possible by the Ontario Modern Language Teachers' Association Toronto French Contest.

Open to domestic UBC undergraduate degree students and graduate students (MA, PhD) on any campus whose course load is at least 50% in or related to French as a second language. Awards totalling $108,000, valued at $3,000 each, are offered annually by the Association des collèges et universités de la francophonie canadienne (ACUFC). Up to 36 awards are available. The program was established by the Government of Canada and the ACUFC to support bilingualism through postsecondary studies in French as a second language. Awards are made on the recommendation of the Department of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies. There is no separate student application.

Canadian citizens or permanent residents (including protected persons) whose first Canadian official language spoken is English, who completed high school in an English or non-official-language institution, and who enrol full-time in a French Studies degree program taking at least 50% of courses and related activities in French. Special consideration for students facing financial challenges and under-represented groups. Graduates of French-language secondary schools, students whose first official language is French, international students, and refugees are not eligible. A $3,000 bursary funded by the Government of Canada and administered by ACUFC through participating institutions including the University of Windsor. Apply through the institution's French Department awards process, not ACUFC directly. Annual availability depends on grant funding approval.
