Philosophy Scholarships in Canada

Graduating philosophy majors at Glendon College, York University, may qualify in recognition of excellent academic achievement. The award amount varies. One prize is available annually, though it may not be awarded every year. Recipients are selected in course by the Philosophy Department. No separate application is required.

Open to a student convocating with Honors in Philosophy who has shown superior academic achievement. The recipient is the student with the highest academic standing in the last two years of the program. One medal is awarded annually. The award amount varies.

McMaster University students enrolled in Level 2 of an Honours program in Philosophy who, in the judgment of the Department of Philosophy, show the most academic promise receive this scholarship. One scholarship of $475 is granted. No separate application is required; the department selects the recipient.

Continuing University of Calgary undergraduates in any faculty are eligible. The award recognizes the most outstanding essay submitted to the Philosophy Undergraduate Essay Competition. Competition terms are posted by the Department of Philosophy. One award of up to $1,500 is offered annually. Apply through Undergraduate Nominated Awards for continuing students. Funded by the Department of Philosophy.

For a UBC Vancouver student who has completed at least one year, has good academic standing, needs financial assistance, and is specializing in philosophy. A $700 bursary has been endowed by the Unity Odd Fellows Lodge No. 4 in memory of Tobias Tellefsen. Other factors equal, preference is given to a son or daughter of a BC Odd Fellows Lodge member. Submit Odd Fellows Lodge membership documentation with the affiliation bursary application.

For a University College student at the University of Toronto with excellent performance in Philosophy. Eligible UC students are automatically considered; no application is required. Award value varies. Gift of the late John Macdonald.

York University LA&PS students may receive the $250 Doreen Silver Prize in Philosophy for the highest standing in a 3000- or 4000-level philosophy course covering the British Empiricists, Logic and Scientific Method, Metaphysics, or Ethics. Preference goes to courses on the British Empiricists. No application is required. The prize honours the academic achievements of Doreen Silver, PhD.

Undergraduate students on the University of New Brunswick Fredericton campus. One annual $2,250 prize. Awarded on the recommendation of the Department of Philosophy to a student with high standing in an advanced undergraduate metaphysics course. Established by the late Professor Neil MacGill in honour of his colleague Dr. W.F.M. Stewart, former Head of the Philosophy Department.

Acadia University returning philosophy students may receive this in-course prize. One award goes annually to the student the Department judges most outstanding based on academic performance in philosophy courses. The amount varies. No application is required.

Brandon University scholarship awarded on recommendation of the Philosophy Department to an outstanding third- or fourth-year Philosophy student who has taken 70:258 Predicate Logic (or equivalent 70:240 Logic). Amount varies. Preference for students who have completed one of 70:253 Plato and the Presocratics, 70:268 The British Empiricists, or 70:269 The Continental Rationalists, and one of 70:261 Theory of Knowledge, 70:265 Introduction to Political Philosophy, or 70:369 Philosophy of Science (or equivalents).
