Scholarships at University of Richmond

The J.R. Francis Scholarship provides need- and merit-based support to a University of Richmond student majoring or minoring in French for study on campus or abroad through Richmond-sponsored programs. Multiple awards ranging from five thousand to ten thousand dollars may be granted depending on project costs and applicant qualifications. Applications are submitted to the LLC department by the February deadline for summer and academic-year study abroad cycles. Recipients must use funds for eligible Richmond-sponsored study abroad or on-campus language study consistent with department guidelines and financial aid policies.

The Holt Summer Study Scholarship is a merit-based award of approximately two thousand dollars for University of Richmond students participating in faculty-led summer language and culture programs organized by the University. Applicants must be meeting Office of Financial Aid satisfactory academic progress standards and cannot be seniors graduating in May or August of the award summer who have already received eight semesters of Richmond funding. Awards are announced by March 1 for summer programs. Scholarship funds may only be used for Richmond-sponsored summer study abroad and may interact with other summer fellowships if program dates overlap.

The Department of Music offers annually renewable merit-based scholarships to incoming University of Richmond students who plan to major or minor in music and demonstrate commitment as performers, composers, aspiring music scholars, or music industry and production students. Applicants submit a music portfolio through the undergraduate admission portal with area-specific audition recordings rather than a separate written application. Award amounts vary by instrument or specialty and renewal requires declaring a music major or minor, maintaining at least a B average in music courses, and remaining an active leader in department ensembles, lessons, and programming.

The Elizabeth Rae Hodkinson Scholarship honors a former RHCS student and supports rising junior or senior rhetoric and communication studies majors at the University of Richmond who combine strong academics with service to the department, university, or greater Richmond community. Applicants must have a GPA above 3.0 and demonstrate financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid. The department solicits applications in February or March each year, and the number of recipients and award amounts vary annually based on available funds. Selection weighs GPA, potential contributions to RHCS, and commitment to community engagement.
