Scholarships at University of Michigan

The Gloria Wille Bell and Carlos R. Bell Scholarship supports first-year students in the College of Engineering or LSA pursuing undergraduate degrees in engineering, mathematics, physics, computer science, or related scientific fields. Recipients from Virginia, Chicago-area school systems, New Trier High School, or the Illinois Math and Science Academy receive $20,000 per year; Michigan residents receive $10,000 per year. Support continues up to four years with renewal contingent on satisfactory academic progress and a 3.0 cumulative GPA. A separate application on the Bell Scholarship website is required in addition to U-M admission.

The Joseph M. Geisinger Scholarship provides $20,000 in annual support to first-year students entering the College of Engineering at UM-Ann Arbor who are from eligible states outside Michigan. Applicants submit a separate Geisinger application and must be admitted to the College of Engineering before the committee meets in late February. Scholarship support continues for four years or through graduation, whichever is less, with renewal contingent on satisfactory academic progress and a 3.0 cumulative GPA. The committee reviews only materials submitted through the Geisinger application, not the general U-M admission file.

The Alvin M. and Arvella D. Bentley Scholarship recognizes incoming LSA students from Michigan who demonstrated high academic achievement, leadership in high school, and interest in a career in public service. Each year six to eight nominated first-year admits are invited to campus to interview, and two recipients are selected for the award. Bentley Scholars receive $15,000 per year renewable for four consecutive years of undergraduate study. Only students nominated for this award are contacted; other admitted students remain eligible for other LSA Four-Year Renewable Scholarships without a separate Bentley application.

Michigan resident incoming LSA freshmen at the University of Michigan with high academic achievement, leadership, and interest in public service may be nominated for the Alvin M. and Arvella D. Bentley Scholarship. Six to eight nominees are invited to campus to interview; two recipients are selected annually. Each receives $15,000 per year, renewable for four consecutive years of undergraduate study in LSA. Only nominated students are contacted. There is no separate application; nominees are drawn from the pool of first-year admits.

The Blavin Scholars Fund awards financial support to undergraduate students at UM-Ann Arbor with a foster care background who demonstrate financial need. The Blavin Scholars Program also provides mentoring, coaching, year-round housing options, and community support for students navigating college without parental support. Active program participants may receive a Blavin scholarship of up to $5,000 per academic year. A separate application is available annually from early November through late January. Students with foster care or kinship care experience should apply through the Blavin Scholars application portal linked from the Office of Financial Aid.
