Scholarships at Macalester College

The Roetzel Family Summer Fellowship supports Macalester College sophomores and juniors pursuing summer academic work related to religious studies. Students may apply to fund travel, independent research, community engagement, language study, or preparation for senior honors projects with clearly defined academic goals. Each summer one or more fellows receive up to three thousand dollars for an approved project. Applications for the upcoming cycle are due February 28 annually. The fellowship was established by Dr. Calvin J. and Caroline Roetzel to honor his long career teaching biblical studies at Macalester.

The Jack C. and Dorothy DeSimone Pitts Endowment for Study Abroad supports Macalester College undergraduates studying abroad in the social sciences and humanities. Eligible students must enroll in a Macalester-approved semester program with direct enrollment at a foreign university where they take at least one content course taught in a language other than English. Awards range from five hundred to three thousand dollars depending on available funds and applicant pool size. Students submit program and course information with short essays to the Center for Study Away by April 15 for fall and spring programs of the following academic year.

The Action Fund at Macalester College supports student-led civic engagement projects developed in direct collaboration with Twin Cities community-based organizations. Macalester undergraduates propose projects with both action and learning components that address unmet community needs, and may request up to two thousand five hundred dollars per project. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis with priority deadlines of October 15 for fall and February 15 for spring; funded projects must be completed within twelve months. The fund was established in 2001 by alumni who valued community engagement during their Macalester education.

The Borghild K. Sundheim Endowed Scholarship at Macalester College provides financial assistance to an outstanding junior or senior with a concentration in French who demonstrates financial need. The award honors Dr. Sundheim, who chaired the French Department from 1927 to 1967, and was established by alumni, colleagues, and friends. Recipients are selected by the French department from enrolled undergraduates rather than through a campus-wide open call. The scholarship supports continued study in French and Francophone studies at Macalester and is awarded to one student per cycle based on academic achievement and need.

The Bruce Fisher Fund at Macalester College reimburses history students for research expenses related to senior seminar and other departmental research projects. Enrolled undergraduates submit written proposals to the history department chair describing the research, how proposed expenses advance the work, and an estimated budget. Awards are made on a rolling basis throughout the year. Past funding has covered local research costs such as transportation, parking, photocopying, and materials, as well as partial reimbursement for domestic and international research travel undertaken for history coursework or honors work.
