Scholarships at Hillsdale College

The Choral Scholars program awards audition-based scholarships to musically talented, academically competitive Hillsdale undergraduates who form the core of the Christ Chapel Choir. Awards are typically ten thousand dollars per year, renewable according to the aid agreement, and may include tuition support plus free private voice lessons. Prospective fall entrants must submit a pre-screening video by December 15, receive an invitation, and complete a required on-campus audition on the January audition weekend; remote auditions are arranged only when travel is impossible. Scholars rehearse intensively, lead sung worship services and concerts, and fulfill duties outlined before accepting the award. Music major or minor status is not required. Distribution depends on funding, vocal needs, and applicant strength in a given year.

The Frederick Douglass Scholarship Program provides high-achieving students from underserved communities the opportunity to attend Hillsdale College with little or no out-of-pocket cost. Scholarships range in amount and can cover up to the full cost of attendance for four years. Underserved students include those from families with high financial need, first-generation college students, students who have experienced foster care or homelessness, and students who have overcome significant life challenges. The program is open to all applicants regardless of nationality, color, or sex, and follows the standard Hillsdale admission process once a student is identified through the program's outreach. Community-based partners and the Frederick Douglass Leadership Seminar help connect prospective scholars with Hillsdale. Financial aid determinations are made after admission using Hillsdale's private need review rather than the FAFSA.

Incoming Hillsdale freshmen pursuing an art major or minor may apply for partial tuition scholarships funded through the R. Joy Stewart Scholarship Fund and additional Dworski, Fink, and Brooke endowed art funds. Recipients are expected to major or at least minor in art, maintain high performance in art coursework, and may see renewal amounts increase with merit; substandard art performance can jeopardize renewal. Applications require an online submission with a digital portfolio of twelve to twenty high-school works, a personal statement about art background and interests, and a recommendation addressing artistic ability. Applications must be received by January 15, with decisions usually made by March 1 and notification through the Financial Aid Office. Applicants are advised to apply before receiving an admission decision and may schedule a campus visit for an in-person portfolio review.

Hillsdale Independence Scholarships are need-based awards drawn from the privately financed Student Independence Scholarships and Loans fund, created so Hillsdale could replace federal and state taxpayer grants and loans while remaining free of government regulation. Each year hundreds of undergraduates receive Independence Scholarships, Independence Loans, or related Tradition Awards based on demonstrated need reviewed through the Confidential Family Financial Statement. These grants do not require repayment and are combined with merit, endowed, and loan resources into a full aid package. Students must be admitted to Hillsdale, complete the CFFS need analysis, and maintain satisfactory academic progress. The program is central to Hillsdale's commitment that students can attend without using FAFSA-based federal aid, and awards vary with family contribution and total cost of attendance.

Hillsdale College Grants are privately funded, need-based gifts awarded each year to undergraduates who show promise and exceptional financial need as determined through the Confidential Family Financial Statement. Need is calculated as Hillsdale's cost of attendance minus the family contribution, and grants are combined with scholarships, institutional loans, and campus employment into a complete package. Because Hillsdale refuses federal and state student aid, these grants replace outside need-based resources that students might otherwise receive at other institutions.
