Scholarships at Carson-Newman University

The Compass Scholarship awards $4,500 per year to traditional out-of-state Carson-Newman University freshmen and transfer students who qualify with at least a 3.0 GPA or an ACT score of 21 or higher. It renews for four years when eligibility requirements are met. Students receiving a separate full-tuition scholarship or Bonner scholarship, contracted athletes, and intercollegiate recreational sports participants (fishing and archery) are ineligible. Submit the Compass Scholarship Application by February 1, 2026; the Admissions Office distributes the form each year when available.

The Jesse Baker Presidential Academic Fellowship is Carson-Newman University's most distinguished academic award, given annually to one remarkable incoming first-year student. The fellowship covers full tuition, housing, meals, books, and fees for four academic years (eight semesters) of continuous full-time study. Eligible students receive an invitation to the INSIGNIS Academic Scholarship Weekend; participation is required for consideration. Invitees typically need at least a 3.65 GPA and a 28 ACT superscore. The Bonner Scholars Program at Carson-Newman University combines financial support with intensive community service and leadership development rooted in Christ-centered values. Scholars receive $3,000 annually with potential for additional need-based grant funding toward tuition. Participants commit to hands-on service, training, and reflection through the national Bonner network affiliated with the Bonner Foundation. Students are selected through a competitive application and interview process during the year before their freshman year. Current students and transfers may also apply as Opportunity Bonners when cohort openings arise.

The Tarr Full-Tuition Scholarship is Carson-Newman University's premier music award, granted through a competitive Tarr Full-Tuition Scholarship Competition in areas including voice, piano, organ, strings, and other instruments. Prospective music majors must audition as a School of Music entrance requirement and may compete for this full-tuition award, which coordinates with other grants and scholarships already on your aid package. Recipients must remain music majors and meet School of Music GPA requirements for renewal. Additional music scholarships of at least $1,000 per year are also available through the department audition process.
