Scholarships at Brigham Young University

Incoming Brigham Young University freshmen may be considered for the Presidential Scholarship (Dallin H. Oaks Scholarship), BYU's most prestigious freshman award. Recipients must show academic excellence plus character, leadership, integrity, and devotion to Church standards as outlined in For the Strength of Youth. Applicants must opt in to allow BYU to use ACT or SAT scores for Presidential consideration. Fifty new entering freshmen receive the award each year, valued at 150% of Latter-day Saint tuition for eight semesters. Complete the essay portion of the BYU scholarship application and submit ACT or SAT scores by the scholarship deadline. The committee also reviews admissions application information.

Cougar Pell Promise is an eight-semester tuition guarantee for BYU freshmen who applied to the university immediately out of high school and demonstrate eligibility through FAFSA information. The award is determined from financial aid data rather than a separate merit essay, though completing the scholarship application is still required for initial consideration. Recipients must reapply each year to remain eligible under the one-year renewal rules that apply to this program. FAFSA submission by January 2 is required for need-based consideration.

Continuing Student Academic Scholarships are one-year BYU merit awards for former and continuing undergraduate students who complete at least twelve BYU credit hours as a daytime continuing student and submit the scholarship application by the deadline. Consideration is based on BYU cumulative GPA ranked within the student's college, with cutoffs set each year during awarding. Returning missionaries with twelve credits and a mission deferment form may be automatically considered for the semester they return. Students must declare a major by the January 2 deadline or are evaluated as open-major students.

The Generations Endowed Scholarship, endowed by the West family, supports BYU Honors students early in their university careers who are first-generation college students, especially those with demonstrated financial need. Honors students apply through the Honors Program scholarship process with fall applications due July 31 and winter applications due October 30. The award recognizes students building an Honors education while overcoming the additional barriers first-generation students often face. Recipients must remain eligible Honors participants and meet any award terms set by the Honors Program.

The Khona Scholarship supports BYU Honors students who are majors or minors in the Marriott School of Business and are currently working on their Honors thesis. Application deadlines follow the Honors scholarship calendar: March 15 for spring and summer, July 31 for fall, and October 30 for winter. The award connects business-focused Honors thesis work with financial support during the thesis phase. Applicants must be active Honors participants in good standing with a business major or minor and demonstrable thesis progress at the time they apply.

The B. John Garrick Scholarship supports BYU undergraduates pursuing physics, engineering, or earth sciences with emphasis on risk-informed studies relating to energy or the environment. Applicants must maintain at least a 3.5 GPA and submit a statement describing how their course of study connects to risk-informed energy or environmental work. The award is one of several specialty scholarships in the College of Computational, Mathematical, and Physical Sciences and is applied through the college scholarship portal. The college application deadline is February 28 for the 2026-2027 academic year cycle.

The Robert E. and Sherryl S. Nord Scholarship supports BYU juniors and seniors pursuing physical science majors in astronomy, chemistry, geology, or physics who plan to continue to graduate or professional school after the baccalaureate degree. Applicants must maintain at least a 3.5 GPA during the two academic years preceding the award and provide a statement describing graduate or professional school intentions. Preference is given to students who will pursue graduate study at another university. Apply through the college scholarship portal by the February 28 deadline for the relevant academic year.
