Law Scholarships in Canada

For graduate students enrolled in the LL.M. (Common Law) degree program at the Peter A. Allard School of Law at UBC Vancouver. Tuition awards of $500 each are offered by the law faculty. There is no separate application. Awards are made on the recommendation of the Faculty in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

Graduate students enrolled full-time in the Peter A. Allard School of Law LL.M. in Taxation program may be considered based on previous academic, professional, and personal achievements and demonstrated potential to succeed in the program. One or more awards of up to $7,500 may be offered. No application is necessary; all full-time LL.M. Taxation students are automatically considered. The award is made on the recommendation of the Allard School of Law in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

Students in their final year of York University's combined LL.B./M.B.A. program may be considered for this prize. One $500 award goes to the student who stands first in the program. Selection is based on academic standing in the combined degree. Fogler, Rubinoff LLP established the prize in memory of partner Robert R. Jason, a respected tax lawyer and accountant who earned his LL.B. from McGill, an MBA from York, and an LL.M. (Tax) from Osgoode Hall.

Law students who rank in the top 10% of their class are eligible for this Faculty of Law scholarship. Special consideration may be given for financial need, community involvement, and extracurricular activities at the university or faculty. The scholarship is $5,000 and renewable for one year if the holder maintains standing in the top 20% of their class. Recipients are known as Blake Scholars. Selection is made by the Faculty of Law based on academic standing and the factors above.

For a student entering second year of the J.D. program at UBC's Peter A. Allard School of Law who has achieved academic distinction and demonstrated commitment to the highest standards of the legal profession through involvement in community service or student leadership. A $1,450 award made available through an endowment established in honour of Faculty of Law alumnus B. Vincent Reed, QC. The award is made on the recommendation of the Peter A. Allard School of Law. For outstanding domestic J.D. students at UBC's Peter A. Allard School of Law who identify as Indigenous, Black, or as a person of colour. Preference goes to students who have excelled in criminal justice. Awards made available annually through a gift from Kevin B. Westell (B.A., LL.B.). These academic awards are made on the recommendation of the Peter A. Allard School of Law. Apply through the continuing student awards application. Kevin B. Westell was admitted to the British Columbia Bar in 2009. He is a criminal lawyer and founding partner at Pender Litigation.

Canadian citizens or permanent residents (including protected persons) who meet OSAP Ontario residency requirements and face proven financial hardship may apply if they are Year 1 full-time students in the School of Creative Arts/Music or the School of Dramatic Art at the University of Windsor. Selection recognizes outstanding creative work in the final secondary school year, such as playwriting, scores, lyrics, set design, underscoring, lighting, or sound. Performance students may be considered if they also assisted backstage. Recipients must be in good academic standing. Two awards of $1,500 are available. Apply online. Established in 2004 in memory of Ethel May and Rowland Marshall.

University of Victoria undergraduate or graduate students who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents, receive maximum government student loans, and demonstrate financial need may receive one or more Sivertz bursaries. The bursary amount varies; multiple awards may be given. Apply through UVic Student Awards by June 1 for summer or October 15 for winter.

Open to UBC students most proficient in community health nursing practice who are proceeding to further work in that field, and to the most proficient students in journalism or a field related to journalism. Four scholarships of $850 each are provided through a bequest from Ida Helen Badenoch: two for community health nursing and two for the alternate field. No separate application is required. The School of Nursing recommends recipients.

First-year Langara College students enrolled full-time who work 40 or more hours per month at a part-time job and demonstrate financial need. Amount varies. One bursary. Apply through Langara's semester bursary application when open.
