Law Scholarships in Canada

Honours undergraduate or graduate students at York University in social sciences or humanities programs (including Law, Education, Fine Arts, and Environmental Studies) may apply for the David Wurfel Award if they need financial support to conduct research on Filipino history, culture, or society for a thesis, course paper, or project. Applicants need a GPA of at least 6.0. The award provides $1,500. One scholarship is available. Preference goes to undergraduate and master's applicants over doctoral students.

Second- or third-year JD students in the University of Calgary Faculty of Law who are involved with the Student Legal Assistance program are eligible. Selection requires satisfactory academic standing (minimum GPA of 2.60), with preference for students who also demonstrate involvement in the student law community or law-related volunteerism beyond SLA. Law III students at the University of Windsor with financial need who have shown outstanding academic achievement in both family and criminal law may apply. Extra-curricular involvement is considered. One bursary of $1,200 is awarded annually from trust interest. Apply online through the UWin Award Profile. Established in 2011 by the children of Sockley Kamin in honour of their father, a Windsor lawyer who practiced from 1941 until shortly before his passing in 1999.

Full-time University of Ottawa students in the French Common Law Program (including joint programs) or the Canadian Law Program who are from Northern Ontario and demonstrate financial need may apply. The award is named for Senator Josée Forest-Niesing.

Full-time Common Law Section JD students at the University of Ottawa who have completed first year with a minimum GPA of B (6.0) or higher, self-identify as a member of the Black community, are not related to the donor, and demonstrate financial need may apply. At least $500. Apply through Online Scholarships and Bursaries in uoZone with the Financial Questionnaire and a self-identification statement by November 3. The Vincent Gardner Memorial Scholarship assists Black students enrolled full time in the Faculty of Law, Common Law Section.

Full-time Common Law JD students at the University of Ottawa who are Ontario residents and demonstrate financial need under OSOTF terms. Minimum $500 (one award, alternating yearly by gender). Apply through Financial Need Bursaries - Common Law Section (99929) in uoZone with the Financial Questionnaire by October 31.

University of Calgary JD students in second or third year in the Faculty of Law may be considered. Citizenship is open. One prize is offered annually; the amount varies. First preference goes to the student with the most outstanding academic performance in LAW 533: Wills and Estates. Second preference goes to outstanding performance in LAW 619: Estate Planning. This is a law nominated award for new and continuing students. Established by McLeod Law LLP and friends to honour Christopher G. Thomas (1948-2014), partner, mentor, and friend.

Students in the National Law program at the Faculty of Law, Civil Law Section, of the University of Ottawa who hold a Common Law LLB, are Ontario residents, and demonstrate financial need may apply. The award amount varies. Apply via Financial Need Bursaries - Civil Law Section (99930) in uoZone by November 3 with the Financial Questionnaire. The Diana-Lynn and Louis Perret Scholarship Fund (OSOTF) assists National Law students whose education would otherwise be compromised.

Presquito Murdoch Indigenous Law Award — one of the awards funded by Robert J. Award amounts vary by sponsoring fund and are not published as a fixed figure on the Indspire listing. Apply once through Indspire's Building Brighter Futures portal. One complete application is considered for every applicable bursary and scholarship. Consideration rounds close August 1, November 1, and February 1 at 11:59 p.m. EST each academic year; a complete application carries forward across rounds until February 1.
