History Scholarships in Canada

Western University fourth-year Honours students in History or Economics with at least 80% in the previous year and demonstrated financial need may apply for the Grant and Peggy Reuber Merit Scholarships. Recipients are selected for scholarly potential and promise for distinguished achievement after graduation, including leadership and other personal qualities. Two awards of $8,500 are available annually (one History, one Economics when qualified candidates exist). Submit a financial assistance application through Student Center by September 30.

University of Guelph students in a Bachelor of Arts (general or honours) majoring in History, or in any program minoring in History, who have completed at least 10.0 credits and HIST*3140 Witch-hunts and Popular Culture may apply. Recipients must also meet the government-mandated terms for an OSOTF access award. One award of $4,000 is available. Apply by October 7 with a completed Financial Need Assessment Form. Selection is based on the highest grade in the previous offering of HIST*3140; ties go to the highest cumulative average. The Scottish Studies Foundation and private donors established the award, with matching funds through the Ontario Student Opportunities Trust Fund.

U.S. or Canadian citizens or permanent residents with at least junior standing in a German Studies track or minor, or graduate students in humanities and social sciences working on German Studies, may be nominated by a department or program chair for DAAD German Studies Research Grants. PhD students preparing dissertation proposals on modern German topics may also be nominated; students whose proposals were formally accepted more than one year before the deadline are not eligible. Grants of up to $3,000 support one to two months of short-term research in Germany. The number of recipients varies. Nomination by a supervising professor or principal advisor is required. Applications are accepted in spring and fall each year through the DAAD application process.

University of Regina students entering directly from a Canadian high school to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in the Faculty of Arts may receive this $3,000 entrance scholarship. Candidates need a minimum 85% early conditional admission average and must remain registered in at least 9 credit hours when the award is presented. A letter of recommendation from your high school principal or guidance counselor must be sent to Student Awards and Financial Aid. Apply by March 15.

Full-time graduate students in the Department of History at the University of Ottawa whose permanent address is outside Ontario and who demonstrate academic excellence may apply. MA recipients must have completed their coursework; PhD recipients must have completed their comprehensive exams. Open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents, persons with protected or refugee status, and international students. The scholarship is valued at $2,000 or more. Apply via uoZone by November 3 with a supervisor support letter.

Full-time Faculty of Arts undergraduate students at the University of Waterloo who wish to participate in an extracurricular or course-tied experiential activity not covered by tuition, with a minimum 70% cumulative average, may apply. Awards of varying size up to $1,500 are available. Selection is based on academic achievement and how the activity will benefit knowledge acquisition, professional development, or in-class learning. Submit an application form to the Arts Undergraduate Office. Applications are accepted throughout the year. The fund was established by Professor Emeritus Peter Woolstencroft.

Need-based undergraduate students in History at the University of Windsor may apply. Applicants must meet OSOTF II requirements for citizenship and Ontario residency. Two bursaries of $1,000 each are available annually from the OSOTF II History fund. Apply online through the UWinAward profile.

For a University of Calgary Faculty of Arts undergraduate majoring in Greek and Roman Studies or Ancient and Medieval History and entering second, third, or fourth year. Students must be registered full-time but need not carry a full course load. Selection considers performance and interest in Greek and Roman classics. Students of any citizenship or residency may be considered. One prize of up to $200 is offered annually. Students are considered through the Undergraduate Nominated awards process for continuing students. Established by friends of A.D. Winspear, a former professor of Classics, in his memory.

Students who have successfully completed at least one year of studies and are registered in a course in the history of British Columbia the following year may qualify for this bursary. One award of varying amount is granted annually. Apply through the institution's awards application process. Summer applications are due June 1; winter applications are due October 15.

Female University of Victoria students born in British Columbia who are entering or continuing studies in English, History, Theatre, or any Faculty of Science program may apply for this variable-value bursary. Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents, receive maximum full-time Canadian government student loans and grants for their study period, and meet UVic registration and (for continuing students) GPA requirements. Apply through UVic Online tools by June 1 for Summer Session or October 15 for Winter Session. One application per session covers bursaries administered by Student Awards and Financial Aid.
