Communication and Journalism Scholarships in Canada

Canadian citizens or permanent residents in their third semester of SAIT's Radio, Television, and Broadcast News program (Broadcast News major) within the School for Advanced Digital Technology may apply. You must demonstrate financial need and academic achievement. One award of $2,800 is offered for the Fall semester. Apply through mySAIT Student Awards and Financial Aid. Bell Canada sponsors the award.

Full-time University of Waterloo graduate students in the Faculty of Mathematics or Faculty of Arts with a demonstrated interest in computational rhetoric, computational analysis, and/or generation of rhetoric and persuasive text may apply. Selection is based on academic achievement (minimum A- cumulative average in the current program) and that interest as shown in the application. One award of $2,500 is awarded annually. Apply with a CV, unofficial transcript, two reference letters, and a written statement of up to 1,000 words by October 15, 2026. The fund was donated by Sam Pasupalak in honour of Professor Chrysanne DiMarco's teaching and mentorship in computational rhetoric.

University of Guelph students registered in a College of Social and Applied Human Sciences program with a minimum 70% cumulative average who meet OSOTF terms may receive Yeandle Family Scholarships. Several awards of up to $2,000 are made on financial need and academic achievement. Submit a Financial Need Assessment Form to Student Financial Services by October 7 for automatic consideration. Provided by the Estate of Audrey Yeandle with Ontario OSOTF matching.

At York University, a $686 bursary for an upper-year Communication and Media Studies student with demonstrated financial need. Priority goes to students interested in radio broadcasting in Canada or related courses. Recipients must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or protected persons, and Ontario residents. Apply by completing a FAAS profile, with attention to the financial section. Established by York University alumni and friends.

Essex County residents enrolled in year 3 or 4 of the University of Windsor Communication, Media and Film program, with a minimum 75% cumulative average and financial need, may apply. Preference goes to applicants intending a journalism career. One award of $600 is available annually. Apply online through the UWinAward Profile. Established in 1991 by the Rotary Club of Windsor on behalf of President Fred Sorrell, and in memory of Angus Munro, a newspaper reporter and writer.

Canadian citizens, permanent residents, protected/refugee status holders, or international students registered full-time in an honours program at the University of Ottawa Department of Communication who show academic and extracurricular leadership may apply. The scholarship is a minimum of $500. Submit via uoZone with a 500-word leadership summary. Applications are due November 3. The André Ruszkowski Scholarship recognizes Communication honours students who distinguish themselves through academic and extracurricular involvement.

For University of Calgary Faculty of Arts undergraduates entering second, third, or fourth year in Communication and Media Studies or Film Studies. Two awards of up to $400 each are offered annually: one for the best paper in a COMS course by a Communication and Media Studies major, and one for the best paper in a FILM course by a Film Studies major. Students are considered through the Undergraduate Nominated competition for continuing students. Dr. Barbara A. Schneider established the awards to recognize well-researched, well-argued student writing in those programs.

Returning Loyalist College students registered in a program within the School of Media Studies are eligible. Two bursaries are available and the amount varies. Apply through Loyalist's single donor-supported awards application.

KPMG GRC Developing Potential Scholarship — one of the awards funded by KPMG for Indigenous students, administered through Indspire's Building Brighter Futures Bursaries & Scholarships portal. Award amounts vary by sponsoring fund and are not published as a fixed figure on the Indspire listing. Apply once through Indspire's Building Brighter Futures portal. One complete application is considered for every applicable bursary and scholarship. Consideration rounds close August 1, November 1, and February 1 at 11:59 p.m. EST each academic year; a complete application carries forward across rounds until February 1.
