About this scholarship
The Thompson Working Families Scholarship helps incoming first-year Grand Valley State University students from Michigan working families who might otherwise struggle to afford college. The Thompson Foundation provides $5,500 per year, and GVSU pledges to match at least $5,500 in institutional funds annually. Recipients must enroll full time, file a FAFSA demonstrating financial need, and perform 20 hours of community service per year. Preference goes to students with the largest gap between eligible aid and tuition. Veterans with more than one year of full-time U.S. or National Guard service receive special consideration. The award renews for three years with a 2.75 GPA minimum.
