About this scholarship

Two awards at Carleton University's Department of History, made annually when merited on the recommendation of the Chair, for outstanding essay writing. One goes to the student(s) writing the best essay on freedom of the press and/or the right of access to this medium by individuals and organizations. The other goes to the student(s) writing the best essay on Canadian foreign policy. Preference may be given to work on issues related to government, media, and Canadian foreign policy. At least one award is given in each category.

The award amount varies. Faculty nominations are accepted at the end of winter term; students may discuss suitability of an essay with a faculty member.

What else to submit

  • Length requirement is stated in PAGES, not words: 8-20 pages (no word/character limit published, so wordLimit is null).
  • Typed, double-spaced, with one-inch margins; pages numbered.
  • Citation style: MLA, APA, Chicago, or McGill all acceptable; only fully and properly documented entries considered.
  • Include a title page with name, student number, course code, professor's name, and submission date; name must not appear on pages after the title page (anonymous review).
  • Submit in PDF or Word format.
  • Eligibility: students majoring in Human Rights and Social Justice (B.A. General, Honours, or Combined Honours) at Carleton University.
  • Essay must have been written for a course during the relevant academic year and received a grade in the A range; only one essay per academic year.
  • Three prizes of $1,000 each.
  • Faculty nominations are accepted at the end of winter term.
  • A nominated essay must concern either freedom of the press/right of access to media or Canadian foreign policy, and be selected as outstanding essay writing.
