About this scholarship
Children or spouses of New Jersey residents who on September 11, 2001 were killed in the attacks, died from attack injuries, died from illness caused by exposure to attack sites, or were declared missing and presumed dead may apply for the New Jersey World Trade Center Scholarship. Applicants must be citizens, eligible non-citizens, or eligible to file the NJ Alternative Financial Aid Application, and must be full-time undergraduates. Children may apply within eight years of high school graduation; spouses within eight years of the date of death.
Awards are up to $7,500 per academic year and cannot exceed actual tuition, fees, room, and board. The WTC Board sets the amount each summer. The number of recipients varies. Offered twice a year with March and October deadlines.
Apply through HESAA. Students who incur full-time cost of attendance after losing a parent or spouse's financial resources are deemed to have financial need.

- Death certificate
- Physician letter stating cause of death
- Proof of registration with an appropriate State or federal agency
- Complete the WTC Scholarship application online in NJFAMS (New Jersey Financial Aid Management System)
- Proof that the deceased spouse or parent was a New Jersey resident on September 11, 2001
- Original or certified copy (or accurate complete photocopy) of the death certificate
- A letter from the deceased parent or spouse's physician stating the cause of death
- Proof that the deceased parent or spouse was registered with an appropriate State or federal agency (e.g., Victim's Compensation Fund, WTC Medical Monitoring & Treatment Program, or WTC Health Program
- Eligibility: dependent child or surviving spouse of a NJ resident killed/died from the 9/11 attacks or exposure-caused illness; must be a full-time undergraduate, US citizen/eligible non-citizen, main
- Eligible non-citizens and students eligible to file the NJ Alternative Financial Aid Application may also qualify.
