For a Bachelor of Applied Science student entering the Pre-Biomedical Engineering program at UBC Vancouver who is a Canadian citizen and has demonstrated academic achievement, leadership, and entrepreneurial initiative in biomedical engineering.

A $25,000 renewable entrance award funded annually by Dr. Jim McEwen, OC (B.A.Sc. 1971, Ph.D. 1975, D.Sc. 2011) and his family. Subject to continued academic achievement and demonstrated initiative in biomedical engineering innovation, the award renews for a further year of study. The award is made on the recommendation of the School of Biomedical Engineering.

Dr. McEwen invented the microprocessor-controlled automatic tourniquet system and founded the Biomedical Engineering Department at the Vancouver Hospital & Health Sciences Centre in 1975.
