About this scholarship

The John Reinert Scholarship from Out To Protect supports LGBTQ+ individuals pursuing law enforcement careers. Applicants must identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender and be currently enrolled in a basic law enforcement training program — a police or sheriff's academy, corrections academy, state trooper or highway patrol academy, or 9-1-1 dispatcher academy — at the time of application. Both agency-sponsored recruits and self-sponsored students are eligible, and financial need is not required.

Awards are $1,000 each and are typically announced in June and December. Applications are accepted continuously through an online form on the sponsor's site and must include two letters of recommendation from academy staff or peers. Persons related to the organization's board members are not eligible.
