About this scholarship

Indigenous Athabasca University undergraduate students may submit original written work on the preservation of Aboriginal and treaty rights for the Harold Cardinal Essay Prize. Applicants must demonstrate commitment to Aboriginal rights, advocacy for Aboriginal people, and contribution to community, law, politics, or government as they pertain to Aboriginal people.

Three prizes are awarded annually: up to $3,000 for first place, $1,500 for second, and $500 for third. Essays must be original, properly documented work; coursework essays from any AU undergraduate program are eligible. Students may receive this award only once within an undergraduate program.

What else to submit

  • Completed application form
  • One reference or recommendation letter submitted through the AU referee system by the deadline
  • Original properly documented and formatted marked/graded AU coursework essay
  • Required certification and release signature
  • Must be a current Athabasca University (AU) undergraduate student in good academic standing
  • Must be of Aboriginal descent as defined by the applicant's Indigenous nation of origin
  • Must not be a previous recipient of this prize
  • One reference/recommendation letter from a referee of the applicant's choice, submitted via the AU referee system and received by the deadline (a missing reference letter disqualifies the application)
  • Completed application form including personal info, AU program and cumulative GPA
  • Original essay must be a marked/graded AU coursework essay; attach to the application or email separately to awardsapplication@athabascau.ca
  • Application deadline: December 31
  • Required certification and release signature
