About this scholarship

UBC Vancouver graduate students in the Faculty of Forestry whose studies focus on issues related to climate change mitigation and adaptation, such as sustainable forest management practices, wildfire prevention, and carbon capture, may be considered for this fellowship.

Fellowships range from $20,000 to $30,000 per student annually and may be renewed for consecutive years to a total of three years for Master's students and four years for doctoral students, subject to continued satisfactory academic progress. Funding comes from an estate gift by Gordon Bailey (1930-2020) and Nora Bailey (1925-2017).

Recipients are recommended by the Faculty of Forestry in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. There is no separate student application.

Originally from England, Gordon (M.F. 1964, Ph.D. 1970) and Nora settled in British Columbia, where Gordon pursued his graduate degrees at UBC and worked in the British Columbia forestry sector throughout his career. As a student recipient of scholarship support, Gordon left a gift in his will to support the next generation of researchers working to enhance forest health and sustainability.
