About this scholarship

Indigenous students (status or non-status Indian, Metis, or Inuit) enrolled at a Canadian university or college can apply. Applicants must already be attending the institution and either enrolled in a journalism program or actively involved with a campus news organization such as a student paper or broadcast station. The scholarship is open to French- and English-speaking Indigenous Canadians.

One award of $4,000 is intended to help with education costs. Recipients with appropriate experience may also be offered temporary employment or other opportunities at The Canadian Press, at the provider's discretion. Apply with a completed application form. Journalism work samples, newsroom experience, and reference letters from editors or newsroom supervisors are strongly encouraged.

Established in 1990 in honour of Gillis Purcell, general manager of The Canadian Press from 1945 to 1969.
