About this scholarship
The Charles Sumner Prize, funded from the bequest of Senator Charles Sumner, Class of 1830, is offered for the best dissertation from the legal, political, historical, economic, social, or ethnic approach dealing with means or measures tending toward the prevention of war and the establishment of universal peace. The prize is open to Harvard University students in any department who demonstrate knowledge of international law. Essays submitted for the Edward M. Chase Prize may also be considered for the Sumner Prize. No award is made unless the work is judged worthy of publication. Recent doctoral and graduate winners have received two thousand five hundred dollars each.
