About this scholarship
Open to postdoctoral researchers who completed all requirements of their doctorate or health professional degree no more than three years before September 1 of the application year, with extensions for career interruptions. All nationalities may apply, with up to 20% of awards for international applicants tied to a Canadian institution; applicants may not hold or be on leave from a tenure-track or tenured faculty position.
The award provides $70,000 per year (taxable) for 24 months. Each applicant may apply at most three times, and previous Banting or agency postdoctoral fellowship holders are not eligible.
Applications go through the portal of the agency matching the research field (CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC) with a research proposal, referee letters of appraisal, a supervisor research appraisal, and an institutional nomination and commitment form. The SSHRC stream closes September 10, 2026; CIHR and NSERC set separate deadlines, and host institutions often require internal submissions well in advance.
The program replaces the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships and the three agency postdoctoral fellowships under the Canada Research Training Awards Suite introduced in 2025.
