Scholarships at Northern Michigan University

The Waldo Scholarship at Northern Michigan University provides five thousand dollars per year to thirty students ranked next after Harden and Presidential Scholarship winners in the Presidential Scholars Competition. High school seniors and eligible transfer students must register for the competition, participate in a small-group session and interview, and be admitted as degree-seeking students with at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA. The award stacks with automatic merit scholarships. Recipients renew the scholarship for up to eight semesters by maintaining a 3.0 cumulative NMU GPA, full-time enrollment, and satisfactory academic progress toward their first bachelor's degree.

The NMU Leadership Scholarship awards two thousand dollars per year to eleven students, ten first-time freshmen and one transfer student, who demonstrate significant leadership experience and potential through the Presidential Scholars Competition process. Applicants indicate interest on the competition registration form and submit a short essay about one activity on their leadership resume. Facilitators evaluate leadership qualities during the small-group activity. Leadership Scholars who apply to the Student Leader Fellowship Program are automatically admitted without an interview. The scholarship renews for up to eight semesters while maintaining a 3.0 cumulative NMU GPA and full-time enrollment.

The James and Barbara Argeropoulos Scholarship at Northern Michigan University provides five hundred dollars to support students in nursing, social work, counseling, pre-med, psychology, or other care-related fields. The fund was established to recognize health care professionals at the Mather Nursing Center. First consideration goes to employees of Mather Nursing Center with at least one year of employment; if no qualified Mather applicant applies, employees from other area nursing homes may be considered. Students apply through the NMU Foundation donor-funded scholarship system in MyNMU during the annual January to February application window.

The Fillmore C. F. Earney Endowment at Northern Michigan University provides flexible scholarship support to students in the Department of Earth, Environmental, and Geographical Sciences. Established in 2003 by alumnus Dr. Frederick Nelson in honor of Professor Fillmore Earney, the endowment has supported more than twenty-four undergraduate and graduate students for research travel, fieldwork, and academic expenses. Department faculty determine award amounts and uses based on student interests and circumstances. Students in EEGS programs apply through the NMU Foundation donor-funded scholarship system during the annual application window.

The J. Donovan Jackson Scholarship at Northern Michigan University was established in 2001 by family, friends, and former colleagues in memory of Dr. J. Donovan Jackson. The award supports a Nordic skiing athlete who exemplifies teamwork and community service. Three-fourths of the fund's earnings fund the yearly scholarship, with one-fourth supporting the Pep Band Director or other student needs if Pep Band ceases to exist. Award amounts vary annually. Students apply through the NMU Foundation donor-funded scholarship system during the January to February application period each academic year.
