Scholarships at Morehead State University

Morehead State University awards up to ten Eagle Opportunity Scholarships each year valued at full tuition to entering freshmen or transfer students with fewer than twenty-four semester hours who demonstrate community impact and involvement. Applicants must be unconditionally admitted, submit the undergraduate admissions packet with ACT or SAT scores, and complete this separate scholarship application including a resume, essay of at least seven hundred fifty words, and a letter of recommendation postmarked by the December 1 priority deadline. Recipients may renew for up to eight consecutive fall and spring semesters while maintaining a 3.0 cumulative MSU GPA, full-time enrollment, and on-campus housing for at least four semesters, with a fifty-percent reduction if the housing requirement is not met.

Incoming students selected for the George M. Luckey, Jr. Academic Honors Program receive the honors scholarship through a rigorous application process separate from general admission. The enriched program requires specially designed general education options, service, undergraduate research, international experiences, and an exit essay, and scholarship recipients must make satisfactory progress to remain eligible. Applicants submit a completed packet including an essay, recent photograph, sample work, and a recommender letter emailed to the honors director. Membership and scholarship eligibility depend on continued satisfactory progress through the honors curriculum.

The Ron and Ruth Wilson Lykins Tuition Scholarship provides a full-tuition award to a first-year student from Adams County, Ohio, who is unconditionally admitted to Morehead State University and identified as financially eligible by the Office of Financial Aid. The scholarship is renewable for up to three additional academic years provided the recipient maintains a 3.0 GPA. Students apply through the MSU Foundation Scholarship Application on AcademicWorks, which opens in January with a March 15 priority deadline and a June 15 final deadline. The endowment honors Dr. Ron Lykins, a Morehead State alumnus, and his wife Ruth.

The David A. Lynch Scholarship Endowment supports full-time undergraduate juniors or seniors from Ashland, Kentucky, who are majoring in a program within the Elmer R. Smith College of Business and Technology at Morehead State University. The fund was created by alumnus David Lynch to assist Ashland-area business students pursuing degrees he earned as a nontraditional commuter student. Students apply through the MSU Foundation Scholarship Application on AcademicWorks, with applications opening in January and a March 15 priority deadline. Lynch established the endowment to pay forward the scholarship support that helped him complete his business administration degree.

The Alumni Family Scholarship supports incoming freshmen matriculating directly from high school or current Morehead State undergraduate students who are relatives of a degreed Morehead State alumnus or alumna. Qualifying relatives include a parent, grandparent, stepparent, legal guardian, child, or spouse of the graduate. Recipients must enroll full time, defined as at least twelve credit hours per semester, and apply through the MSU Foundation Scholarship Application on AcademicWorks. The award recognizes legacy families connected to MSU and opens each January with a March 15 priority deadline and June 15 final deadline for the upcoming academic year.

The W. Terry McBrayer Scholarship for Excellence assists Morehead State University students from Greenup County, Kentucky, who attended Greenup County Schools and have unmet financial need while maintaining good academic standing. Two recipients are awarded each year through the MSU Foundation Scholarship Application. The endowment honors the late W. Terry McBrayer, a Greenup County native, Morehead State alumnus, attorney, and Kentucky legislator whose daughter established the fund to fulfill his wish to help students who might otherwise be unable to afford college. Applications open each January with a March 15 priority deadline on AcademicWorks.

The Surmont Family Biology Scholarship endowment provides aid to nontraditional biology majors at Morehead State University who balance educational aspirations with other life responsibilities, as donor Al Surmont did while earning his biology degrees at MSU. The fund was established by Joe and Sherry Surmont to honor Al's parents and their lifelong commitment to education and conservation. Students apply through the MSU Foundation Scholarship Application on AcademicWorks, which opens in January each year. The scholarship supports Eagles pursuing biology degrees who may face financial demands beyond standard merit or need-based packages.

The Herb Ramey Memorial Scholarship Endowment supports incoming Morehead State University students with a cumulative high school GPA of at least 3.0 who demonstrate financial need determined by the Office of Financial Aid and have exhibited strong academic achievement. Preference is given to students from Rowan County and Fleming County, Kentucky. Applicants complete the MSU Foundation Scholarship Application on AcademicWorks, which opens in January with a March 15 priority deadline. Donors Vonda L. Melton, Darinda Ramey-Marriner, and Mary P. Ramey established the memorial fund.

The Joyce and Roy Spaulding Scholarship supports full-time Morehead State University undergraduates majoring in a program within the College of Education who maintain a GPA of 2.8 or greater. Applicants must complete supplemental essay questions on the MSU Foundation Scholarship Application describing their view of student success and their educational journey. The fund was established by donor Russell Scott Spaulding. Applications are accepted through AcademicWorks each year from January through the June 15 final deadline, with March 15 as the priority date for full consideration.
