Scholarships at University of Maryland, College Park

Annual $5,000 scholarship for at least one Diamondback student newspaper staffer with at least two semesters of experience who remains full time and continues working at The Diamondback for the two semesters following the award. Applicants submit an application with writing, multimedia, or other journalism samples. The final selection is made by David Simon, UMD professor and relative of the late David Mills for whom the award is named. The scholarship is administered through the Philip Merrill College of Journalism scholarship portfolio.

Endowed scholarship created in memory of former Merrill College Dean Reese Cleghorn for undergraduate or graduate journalism students based on academic merit, with preference for students demonstrating financial need. The award is part of the college's donor-sponsored portfolio supporting undergraduates regardless of ability to pay. Application procedures and deadlines follow Merrill College and Scholarship Universe cycles for continuing and incoming journalism students. Recipients are selected by the college scholarship committee from eligible journalism majors.

Merit scholarship for BSOS undergraduates, with preference for rising sophomores majoring in Government and Politics, who have overcome significant personal or medical challenges. The renewable award requires a 3.2 or higher GPA, demonstrated financial need, and a completed Scholarship Universe application with transcript, resume, short bio, hardship statement, financial need statement, and faculty reference.
