Scholarships at Harvard University

The Thomas Temple Hoopes Prize honors outstanding undergraduate scholarly work or research across literary, artistic, musical, scientific, historical, and other academic subjects taught in the Harvard College curriculum. Funded by the estate of Thomas T. Hoopes, Class of 1919, the prize recognizes excellence in projects developed under faculty supervision, including senior theses and other nominated work. Faculty members nominate eligible student projects; student winners receive five thousand dollars each, faculty nominators of winning projects receive two thousand dollars, and written winning projects are bound and shelved in Lamont Library for two years.

The Edward M. Chase Prize, established by Edward M. Chase of Manchester, New Hampshire, is offered for the best essay on a subject relating to the promotion of world peace. The prize is open to Harvard University students in any department under the same terms as the Charles Sumner Prize, and essays may be considered for both awards. Competitors choose a subject within the peace-promotion scope, subject to committee approval. Eligible doctoral dissertations are considered without special application; other entrants follow Department of Government submission rules. No prize is awarded unless the work is judged worthy of publication. Recent winners have received two thousand five hundred dollars.

The Richard Glover Ames and Henry Russell Ames Award was created in 1935 in memory of two brothers who gave their lives to save their father at sea. Two members of the Harvard College senior class who have shown energy in helping themselves and who exhibit sterling character and inspiring leadership matching the Ames brothers are chosen by the Class Committee from nominations submitted by classmates, faculty, staff, and coaches. There is no student application. The Harvard-Cambridge Scholarships program awards four scholarships annually for one year of graduate study at the University of Cambridge immediately after Harvard College graduation. The Lionel de Jersey Harvard Scholarship (Emmanuel College), John Eliot Scholarship (Jesus College), Lt. Charles H. Fiske III Scholarship (Trinity College), and Gov. William Shirley Scholarship (Pembroke College) each cover tuition, fees, college housing, and a generous stipend for living expenses and travel. Applicants must be Harvard College seniors in good standing who complete their undergraduate degree and gain admission to a Cambridge graduate program. Applications are accepted in late fall with awards announced in mid-February.
