Scholarships at Clark University

The Global Scholars Scholarship is a merit award for international first-year applicants who are outstanding students deeply engaged in their school or local communities. Eligible candidates include high school students who are not U.S. permanent residents or citizens, as well as U.S. citizens or permanent residents who reside overseas and complete their entire secondary education outside the United States. Unlike Clark's other international merit awards, the Global Scholars Program requires a separate essay submitted with the admission application. Scholars join a supported community with faculty advisers and volunteer staff or alumni mentors. International first-year students are automatically considered for International Traina, Achievement, and Jonas Clark awards but must submit the additional Global Scholars essay to be considered for this scholarship.

The David R. Porter Class of 1935 Prize for Excellence in Economics is awarded each fall to the outstanding senior majoring in economics at Clark University. The prize was established in honor and memory of David R. Porter, a Clark alumnus and university trustee, by his family and friends. It recognizes exceptional achievement by an economics major nearing graduation. Students do not submit a separate application; the Economics Department selects the recipient based on academic performance in the major. The award is one of several departmental prizes listed in the Clark economics program FAQ alongside the Sheftel Endowed Prize and Roger Van Tassel Book Prize.

The M. Margaret Comer Memorial Award for Undergraduate Studies in the Biological Sciences at Clark University honors Professor Margaret Comer, a Clark faculty member from 1976 to 1992 known for her commitment to exacting scientific research. The award annually supports an undergraduate who demonstrates achievement or high potential in biology or biochemistry research. The Biology Department selects recipients to recognize research promise rather than through an open application process. Biology majors at Clark may also compete for the David Potter Award for Excellence in Biology and are encouraged to explore the Noyce Scholarship if interested in teaching careers in the sciences.

The Roger Van Tassel Book Prize is awarded each year at Clark University to an outstanding freshman or sophomore in elementary economics. The award takes the form of a book such as a biography of an economist or a classic work in economics, reflecting Professor Van Tassel's passion for introducing undergraduates to the field during his 42 years at Clark, including 21 years as department chair. Recipients are chosen by the Economics Department rather than through a separate application. The prize is one of Clark's named economics achievement awards alongside the David R. Porter Prize for senior excellence and the Harry B. and Alice N. Sheftel Endowed Prize.
