Scholarships at Catawba College

The Socratic Scholarship is the most prestigious scholarship at Catawba College. Qualified students are invited to compete for a full-tuition scholarship package based on high school grade point average, course rigor, and standardized test scores. To be considered, students must have a weighted GPA of at least 3.7, an ACT composite score of 25 or equivalent SAT, and must apply and be admitted to Catawba by November 1. Invited competitors submit an application essay and participate in an interview during the Socratic Scholarship competition. Recipients must maintain a 2.7 cumulative GPA for renewal each academic year.

The Hobgood Scholarship Competition is an invitation-only theatre arts scholarship competition at Catawba College for incoming students who demonstrate exceptional potential aligned with the department's mission of changing the face of American theatre. Preliminary screenings are completed through the Accept'd platform or by auditioning in person at SETC, NCTC, or ITF. To qualify, students must have a minimum weighted cumulative GPA of 3.75 and be unconditionally accepted to Catawba College. Invited finalists compete at an on-campus competition typically held in late January. Theatre faculty evaluate audition or portfolio materials as part of the Shuford School of Performing Arts scholarship process.

Theatre Arts Performing Arts Scholarships at Catawba College are awarded by the Department of Theatre Arts to incoming students in performance, design, production, and related BFA and BA programs. Awards cover all or part of tuition and expenses based on auditions submitted through Accept'd or in-person at regional conferences such as NCTC and SETC. Theatre majors are encouraged to apply and audition during the admission process, including for the invitation-only Hobgood competition after prescreening. Recipients contribute to department productions and maintain academic and artistic standards set by the Shuford School of Performing Arts for renewal each semester or year.
