Scholarships at Canisius University

The Hassett Family Creative Writing Scholarship is a competitive full-tuition award for incoming Canisius University freshmen or transfer students who declare a creative writing major and demonstrate outstanding writing talent. Applicants must apply to Canisius, select creative writing as their intended major, submit a writing sample of up to ten pages, and include one letter of recommendation addressing their potential as a creative writer. The scholarship is renewable for up to four years while the recipient remains a declared creative writing major with a minimum 3.0 GPA and files FAFSA and TAP applications annually.

The Visit and Apply Scholarship at Canisius University provides an additional $1,000 per year to admitted freshmen who complete both an official campus visit and submit an admission application. Eligible visits include an on-campus tour with a counselor interview or an official admissions virtual interview with an Admissions Counselor. Students must apply through the Canisius Application or Common App. The grant is renewable for up to four years of full-time undergraduate study and stacks with other Canisius merit awards for which the student qualifies.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship at Canisius University honors Dr. King's dedication to peace and equality and provides $1,000 per year for up to four years of full-time study. New students from all backgrounds and income levels may apply through the COPE office by submitting a separate application, essay, and letters of recommendation. Applicants are evaluated on academic performance, personal achievements, community service, and commitment to Dr. King's ideals. To renew each year, scholars must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.25 and complete ten hours of community service per semester in a social justice setting.
