Geology Scholarships in Canada

For undergraduate students in their final year of an approved major or honours degree in earth sciences at Simon Fraser University. Selection is based on academic performance in upper-level earth sciences courses. One scholarship of $3,700 is offered. Recipients are nominated by the Department of Earth Sciences.

Full-time third- or fourth-year University of Windsor Earth and Environmental Science students in good standing who are pursuing a thesis and experiential learning in sustainable development may apply. Preference is to select one female and one male recipient each year. Selection is by a department committee under the Head of Earth and Environmental Science. Two awards of $1,000 are available. Apply online through the UWinAward Profile. Submit a 300-word research summary and budget; an interview may be required.

Students entering second or subsequent year in an earth science degree at a Canadian university may apply for this $2,000 scholarship from the CIM New Brunswick Branch. One award is granted annually. Applicants must have been born in New Brunswick, resided there for seven years, or have immediate family residing in the province. Academic merit, extracurricular involvement, and financial need are considered. Apply to CIM-NB by March 31.

For a student enrolled in the Department of Earth Sciences at Simon Fraser University who is in good academic standing (minimum CGPA of 2.00) and has demonstrated leadership or community service at SFU, or outreach and promotion of geoscience to the community. Preference is given to applicants in their second year. One award of $1,800 is granted annually. Apply through the Department of Earth Sciences with a cover letter, letter of reference, and CV or resume when applications are announced.

For graduate students enrolled in an Earth & Environmental Sciences program who, on the recommendation of the School of Earth, Environment & Society, demonstrate academic and research excellence. The scholarship is $5,000 and is renewable for one year if the student maintains good academic standing. Established in 2020 by D. Keith MacDonald (Hons. B.Sc., Magna Cum Laude, Class of 1980).

Dalhousie University Earth and Environmental Sciences undergraduates who have completed their first year of residence with high academic standing may receive this scholarship. Preference goes to students planning a career in the mining industry. One award; amount varies. It is awarded on departmental recommendation, with no application required. The scholarship was created by the widow of James L. Hall, a Dalhousie student from 1919 to 1921, and by his sister Elizabeth L. Hall.

McMaster University students entering Level II, III, IV, or V of a B.Sc. program in the School of Earth, Environment and Society who have attained notable standing are eligible. Four awards of $2,300 each are available. Ordinarily, not more than one scholarship is awarded per program. No application is required.

Western University undergraduate students who achieve the highest standing in the geophysics honours thesis course (formerly Earth Sciences 490) receive this annual departmental prize. One $300 prize is awarded. No application is required.

Graduate students in Geological Sciences at UBC Vancouver are eligible for these scholarships, which are awarded on the basis of academic excellence. Preference is given to graduate students studying Economic Geology; if no students fit that criterion, preference goes to students studying Mining and Metallurgy. Two or more scholarships totalling $6,200 are awarded. There is no student application; awards are made on the recommendation of the Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. The scholarships were endowed by Endeavour Silver Corporation.

Undergraduate students in Geological Sciences at UBC Vancouver are eligible for these scholarships. Two or more scholarships, based on academic excellence, come from an endowment by Endeavour Silver Corporation. The Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences recommends recipients. No separate application is required.
