Economics Scholarships in Canada

Undergraduate students in the Department of Economics at UBC may qualify. Scholarships from an endowment totalling $4,250 are available; per-recipient amounts vary within the pool. There is no separate application. The Department of Economics recommends recipients. The fund was endowed by alumni and friends of the Department.

Awarded to a graduating B.Comm. student of outstanding merit in the Honours Economics program. Estimated value is $550.

McMaster University students graduating from an Honours program in Economics with outstanding achievement in Econometrics and overall academic merit may qualify. One prize of $1,000 is awarded. The Department of Economics selects the recipient. J. Stephen Yeo (Class of 1972) established the award in 2009 in honour of Dr. Frank T. Denton, Professor Emeritus in Economics.

Carleton University undergraduate economics students who show aptitude in comparative economics. One scholarship awarded annually when merited. The amount varies. The Chair of the Department of Economics recommends recipients. No application is required.

Outstanding UBC Vancouver graduate students in the Vancouver School of Economics may be considered for this award, with preference for students who demonstrate an interest in focusing their studies on topics related to happiness and well-being. The award amount varies. Awards are funded through an endowment established by friends, family, and colleagues in honour of Dr. John F. Helliwell (B.Com. 1959), along with matching funds from the Faculty of Arts. Recipients are recommended by the Vancouver School of Economics in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. There is no separate student application. Dr. Helliwell is a Canadian economist and Professor Emeritus of Economics at UBC. He was one of the three founding editors of the World Happiness Report in 2012 and was elected to the Royal Society of Canada in 1978 and appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1987.

Open to the top academic student entering a Major, Honours, or Combined Major program in Economics at UBC Vancouver. The scholarship is $6,300, funded through an endowment established by the Huston Family Foundation in recognition of D.R. Huston (M.A. Economics 1990) and his family. The award is made on the recommendation of the Vancouver School of Economics. There is no separate student application.

Open to UBC Vancouver undergraduate and graduate Economics students nominated by instructors for an outstanding empirical essay in Industrial Relations or another branch of economics. The award is a $150 prize. Instructors in the Vancouver School of Economics nominate essays, with weight placed on innovative data collection and analysis and clarity of exposition. There is no student application. The Jamieson-Rosenbluth Prize recognizes excellence in empirical economic research.

Undergraduates majoring in Economics in York University's Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies who have completed at least 48 credits with a minimum cumulative GPA of B (6.00). Preference may go to a student enrolled in a Public Finance course. Recipients must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or protected persons, Ontario residents, and demonstrate financial need. The award is $1,000. Apply through FAAS with attention to the financial section.
