Area, Ethnic and Gender Studies Scholarships in Canada

Declared Simon Fraser University International Studies majors undertaking study, research, internship, or volunteer opportunities abroad of three weeks or longer. Awards are valued up to $8,000 based on financial need, achievement, and quality of the opportunity. Students may hold only one of the Simons Foundation International Travel Grant or this award during their SFU studies. Apply with an advising transcript, a one-page opportunity and need statement, and a one-page budget. Recipients submit a one-page reflection and photos within one month of return.

Full-time or part-time Women and Gender Studies students at the University of Toronto may apply based on academic merit and financial need. Preference goes to those deemed most likely to contribute to studies on the status of women, community studies, and public policy. Recipients may receive up to $3,600. The City of Toronto sponsors this scholarship.

Undergraduate students registered at the University of Ottawa Institute of Feminist and Gender Studies who are Canadian citizens, permanent residents, protected-status holders, or international students, are in good academic standing, and demonstrate financial need may receive this scholarship. The Murida Undergraduate Scholarship in Women's Studies supports undergraduates at the Institute of Feminist and Gender Studies who demonstrate financial need.

York University students who entered under the Mature Student Basis of Admission, are majoring or minoring in Women's Studies with a minimum cumulative GPA of 5.00 (C+), and demonstrate financial need may be considered for this bursary. Applicants must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or protected persons, and Ontario residents. The award is $1,750. University of Toronto Scarborough students entering third or fourth year who have completed at least 1.0 FCE related to Asian studies or Buddhist studies, and who plan to continue coursework in those areas, may receive the Kwong-Loi Shun Award. Preference goes to students with a minimum 3.0 GPA who participate in campus life and foster cross-cultural connections. The award is $1,000. Apply through the UTSC Awards Profile by March 15, 2026.

University of Alberta Faculty of Native Studies students with superior academic achievement in Advanced Cree courses may receive the Adrian Hope Prize in Cree Language. The prize is $875 (one award). The recipient is chosen on academic standing in Advanced Cree. Apply through the University of Alberta Awards Hub.

York University School of Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies scholarship for a year 3 or 4 student who has completed year 2 requirements and the core women's studies course, and who shows special academic promise in women's studies plus demonstrated financial need, interest in lesbian studies, or both. Undergraduate Equity Studies majors at York University who are Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or protected persons, Ontario residents, with a minimum 6.00 cumulative GPA and demonstrated financial need. Preference for students committed to fighting social injustices including discrimination, racism, and poverty through community or school activities. The award is $750. Awarded to a York University student enrolled in a major or minor in women's studies. Preference is given to a student who entered York through the Bridging program.
