About this scholarship

Full-time or part-time students enrolled in an approved Virginia teacher education program who plan to teach in a critical shortage area may be nominated for the Virginia Teaching Scholarship Loan Program. Candidates need a cumulative 2.7 GPA. Current paraprofessionals are also eligible.

Awards of up to $10,000 per academic year are prorated for part-time enrollment. Selected recipients sign a promissory note with service-based forgiveness.

Nominees apply through their institution's authorized designee. The Virginia Department of Education notifies selected students.

  • Background-information disclosures and supporting explanatory/court documents where applicable
  • Be nominated for the scholarship by the Virginia institution where you are enrolled (deans/chairs/designees of the teacher education program submit completed applications to VDOE)
  • Be a domiciliary Virginia resident enrolled full-time or part-time in an approved undergraduate or graduate teacher education program at an accredited Virginia public or private four-year institution
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.7 on a 4.0 scale
  • Enrolled in (or, for minority candidates, any) critical teacher shortage discipline/endorsement area
  • Submit FAFSA Submission Summary (FSS) per institution requirements
  • Two letters of reference (typically one from a current/previous employer and one from an academic advisor) per institution requirements
  • Unofficial transcripts
  • Complete all sections of the official VDOE application form and sign each page (in blue ink); selected recipients must later sign and return a notarized Promissory Note
  • Background-information disclosures (felony/misdemeanor/license/child-abuse questions) with explanatory letters and court documents where applicable
  • Agree to teach full-time under contract in a Virginia public school for at least two years in a critical shortage discipline/high-need school after becoming licensed
  • Selected recipients must sign a notarized promissory note.
